Destination Forward

The GW International Institute of Tourism Studies, supported by Miles Partnership and the Coraggio Group, is conducting a first-of-its-kind study that will analyze how the new generation of destination management plans are advancing sustainable tourism and addressing complex challenges across diverse destinations.

We aim to explore what defines effective destination stewardship strategies and how they empower action for more sustainable tourism. To do so, we will evaluate the plans using specific criteria that reflect core elements of sustainable and inclusive destination management.

  1. Holistic Approach: A clear focus on balancing environmental conservation, cultural preservation, resident quality of life, and economic sustainability.
  2. Sustainability Integration: Prioritizes sustainability across environmental, social, cultural, and economic aspects.
  3. Stakeholder Engagement: Demonstrates inclusive involvement from public, private, local communities, and Indigenous groups.
  4. Multi-Sector Collaboration: Engages diverse sectors like tourism, public lands, transportation, and economic development.
  5. Local Scale: Focus on city, county, or specific destination plans, with potential for future state and national-level analysis.

By identifying these best practices and offering actionable insights, this study aims to serve as a valuable resource for advancing destination stewardship and inspiring sustainable tourism strategies worldwide.

How many destinations will be included in the study?

There are currently 35 U.S. destinations being analyzed for the study.

When will the results of the study be published?

We will publish an industry report in June 2025. The academic research paper will follow in 2026.
