Dropping Courses
Overview
Courses dropped prior to the start of the semester (before the first day of classes) will have 100% of the tuition charges refunded. Courses dropped beginning the first day of classes are subject to the university refund schedule, which governs the prorated cancellation of semester tuition charges in cases of program adjustment or withdrawal. Students who have registered assume the responsibility for both the academic implications and financial charges for the entire semester, regardless of their attendance in class and regardless of the method of payment used.
Academic Penalty for Dropping a Course
Fall/Spring Module Courses
Students can request to drop a module course with no academic penalty through the end of the fourth week of module classes. The dropped course will not appear on the student’s transcript.
Students wishing to withdraw from a module course after the end of the fourth week but before the end of the sixth week of module classes must make the request through a Policy Exception Request . The course will be assigned a notation of W (Authorized Withdrawal). A policy exception request must be accompanied by documentation of extenuating circumstances. Students should not assume that policy exception requests will be approved. Until a student receives written confirmation that an exception has been approved, the student should operate under the assumption that it will be denied (i.e., the student should continue to attend class, submit assignments, consider alternatives, etc.).
After the end of the sixth week of module classes, students will receive a letter grade for any module course in which they are enrolled. Requests to drop/withdraw from a course after the module has ended, the final project and/or exam has been attempted, or a grade has been issued will not be considered.
Fall/Spring/Summer Full Semester Courses
Students can request to drop a semester course with no academic penalty through the end of the fourth week of semester classes. The dropped course will not appear on the student’s transcript.
Students can request to withdraw from a semester course after the end of the fourth week but before the end of the eighth week of semester classes. The course will be assigned a notation of W (Authorized Withdrawal).
Students wishing to withdraw from a semester course after the end of the eighth week but before the end of the thirteenth week of semester classes must make the request through a Policy Exception Request .
After the end of the thirteenth week of semester classes, students will receive a letter grade for any semester course in which they are enrolled. Requests to drop/withdraw from a course after the semester has ended, the final project and/or exam has been attempted, or a grade has been issued will not be considered.
Summer Session Courses

Students can request to withdraw from a course after the end of the first week but before the end of the fourth week of summer session classes. The course will be assigned a notation of W (Authorized Withdrawal).
Students wishing to withdraw from a course after the end of the fourth week but before the end of the fifth week of summer session classes must make the request through a Policy Exception Request .
After the end of the fifth week of module classes, students will receive a letter grade for any summer session course in which they are enrolled. Requests to drop/withdraw from a course after the session has ended, the final project and/or exam has been attempted, or a grade has been issued will not be considered.
Medical or Mental Health Withdrawals
In the event of a serious medical and/or mental health condition or family emergency, a student may request a withdrawal from all of their courses by the Friday prior to the last week of classes for the module/semester in which the courses are held. Students should continue to attend all of their classes until they receive a final decision on their policy exception request. Requests after the semester has ended, the final project and/or exam has been attempted, or a grade has been issued will not be considered.
Refund Policy
Students will receive a tuition refund for dropped courses as posted on the Office of the Registrar website. Note, refund schedules relate to the week of classes, not the day the class starts. Should a student voluntarily withdraw from courses, credit for tuition will be calculated according to the date the academic advisor receives notification via the Registration Transaction Form.
The University has updated its online course refund policy. The online course refund schedule is:
- First and second week of classes: 90% refund
- Third and fourth week of classes: 50% refund
- Fifth week of classes and after: 0% refund
