   Decision Sciences 

Young Hoon Kwak, associate professor of decision sciences, was awarded a 5-year NSF grant for a project titled “Collaborative Research: Designing Intelligent Industrial Robots for STEM Inclusion by Leveraging Self-Determination Theory to Foster Autistic Talent in Manufacturing Work.” Dr. Kwak will serve as co-PI alongside SEAS faculty member Chung Hyuk Park.

Miguel Lejeune, professor of decision sciences, has been appointed as a senior member of INFORMS (Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences) by the INFORMS Board. INFORMS is a society comprised of operations research and analytics professionals from academia and industry. INFORMS' mission, encapsulated in the tagline “Smarter Decisions for a Better World,” underscores the commitment to advancing and promoting the science and technology of decision making to save lives, save money, and solve problems.

Young Hoon Kwak received the 2024 Project Management Institute (PMI)'s Donald Barrie Award during the 2024 PMI Global Summit. The Donald S. Barrie Award is for a research paper which seeks to advance the PMBOK Guide in the field of design, procurement and/or construction by providing a practical contribution to design, engineering and construction.

Miguel Lejeune, professor of decision sciences, has been elected a Fellow of the Washington Academy of Science.

Miguel Lejeune, professor of decision sciences, is the recipient and principal investigator (PI) of a three-year research Grant entitled “Risk-Averse Optimization for Stressed Power Grids: Models, Theory, and Algorithms” from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and its Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS).

Yuan Guo, assistant professor of decision sciences, was awarded first prize in the best paper competition at ISCOM 2024, the National Conference on Supply Chain and Operations Management, for their paper titled A Bilevel View for Fluid Stockout-Based Substitution.

Young Hoon Kwak, associate professor in the Department of Decision Sciences, has been selected to join the Academic Insight Team (AIT) at the Project Management Institute (PMI). AIT provides expert support and recommendations for PMI's academic programs, including research, awards, and more. His term will run from January 2025 to December 2027.

 

   Finance

Alexandre M. Baptista, associate professor of finance, presented a paper entitled “From mean-variance analysis to mental accounting and back: Bridging contributions of Markowitz to portfolio selection” at the 60th annual meeting of SEINFORMS (Southeastern Chapter of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences). The paper received two awards at the Meeting: Best Submission Award in the Economics and Finance Track and Best Paper Award. The paper was written in honor of the late Harry Markowitz, a co-recipient of the 1990 Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences (with Merton Miller and William Sharpe) for pioneering work in the theory of financial economics.

   Management

The book “Performance Management” by Professor Herman Aguinis, has been ranked among the top 10 most impactful talent management publications within the context of Industry 4.0. The article, titled Talent Management in Industry 4.0: A Bibliometric Review of Required Skills and Competencies, was based on all publications between 1962 and 2024 and used bibliometric analysis with the software VOSviewer.

Herman Aguinis, Avram Tucker Distinguished Scholar and professor of management, has been ranked as the fourth most-cited author in the area of artificial intelligence and talent management. The study, published in GBS Impact: Journal of Multi-Disciplinary Research and authored by researchers from the Kousali Institute of Management Studies (India), was based on all articles, conference proceedings and monographs published between 2010 and 2022.

William E. Halal, professor emeritus of management, technology, and innovation, has been placed in the top 0.5% of scholars worldwide by number of publications, citations and publication quality according to ScholarGPS, a scholarly analytics platform, making him a Top Scholar in the field of Business and Management. Academia reports that publications authored by Professor Halal have been cited 34,805 times.

Herman Aguinis, Avram Tucker Distinguished Scholar and professor of management, received the Journal of Management Scholarly Impact Award, recognizing the article published five years prior that has had the greatest impact on the field for “On corporate social responsibility, sensemaking, and the search for meaningfulness through work” (Aguinis & Glavas, 2019, Journal of Management).

N. Sharon Hill, professor of management, has received funding from the Office of the Vice Provost for Research for a University Seminar on the topic of “Technology in Teamwork: Tool and Teammate.” This is Dr. Hill’s second University Seminar award following three successful renewals for a previous University Seminar that ended last year.

An article by Herman Aguinis, Avram Tucker Distinguished Scholar and professor of management, has received the Academy of Management Learning and Education (AMLE) Decade Award. His 2014 article Scholarly Impact: A Pluralist Conceptualization has been recognized as the most influential article published in the journal 10 years prior. AMLE’s mission is to contribute to management learning and education by publishing theory, empirical research, reviews, critiques, and resources that address the processes of management teaching and the learning that results from it. Additionally, AMLE publishes work that addresses important issues in the institutional environment and administration of business schools and their stakeholders. Professor Aguinis will receive the award at a ceremony at the annual meetings of the Academy of Management in August in Chicago.

Journal of Management article on corporate social responsibility co-authored by Herman Aguinis, Avram Tucker Distinguished Scholar and professor of management, has been ranked as the #1 most influential article in the area of micro-enterprise sustainability among all articles published between 2000 and 2022. The study, published in August 2024, identified the most influential articles based on using two databases: Scopus (3,526 articles) and Web of Science (2,538 articles).

Herman Aguinis, Avram Tucker Distinguished Scholar and professor of management, has been ranked as the #4 most influential scholar in the area of philanthropic leadership. The study, published in the International Journal of Organizational Analysis, implemented a bibliometric analysis using the Scopus database and all articles published between 1991 and 2021.

The article by Herman Aguinis, Avram Tucker Distinguished Scholar and professor of management, titled “'Organizational Responsibility: Doing Good and Doing Well,” is the #1 most cited in micro-level corporate social responsibility among all published between 2000 and 2023. The study, published in the journal Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management, was based on the Scopus database and an initial database of 7,554 publications.

Herman Aguinis, Avram Tucker Distinguished Scholar and professor of management, has been included in Clarivate’s 2024 Highly Cited Researchers list for the seventh consecutive year. He is among the world’s 41 most influential researchers in the category of Economics & Business, “demonstrating significant and broad influence—this small fraction of the researcher population contributes disproportionately to extending the frontiers of knowledge and contributing to innovations that make the world healthier, more sustainable, and drive societal impact.”

Herman Aguinis, Avram Tucker Distinguished Scholar and professor of management, has been recognized by Fortune Korea magazine for his research on star performance, identified as the No. 2 HR global trend for 2025, following AI.

Herman Aguinis, Avram Tucker Distinguished Scholar and professor of management, has been ranked among the top 10 researchers in the literature on flexible work arrangements (e.g., telecommuting, compressed work weeks) and employee performance. The study, published in the December 2024 issue of the International Journal of Academic Research in Business and Social Sciences, used the Scopus database and was based on all articles published between 1989 and 2023.

Research by Herman Aguinis, Avram Tucker Distinguished Scholar and professor of management, was featured in the Brazilian monthly business magazine “ES Brasil.” The article, From Purpose to Practice: Performance Evaluation in Focus (“Do propósito à prática: avaliação de desempenho em foco”), describes Professor Aguinis’ research on how to align individual and team performance with an organization’s strategic goals.

An article by Herman Aguinis, Hannah Kremer (PhD GWSB ’22), and Isabel Villamor (PhD GWSB ’22), titled “Innovation Leadership: Best-Practice Recommendations for Promoting Employee Creativity, Voice, and Knowledge Sharing,” has been ranked as the #4 most cited in a bibliometric analysis published in the Journal of Information and Knowledge Management Systems.

Herman Aguinis is ranked #14 globally for most prolific author of articles on the Financial Times (FT-50) journal list in management and organizations (and #54 across accounting, economics, finance, information systems, management and organizations, marketing, and operations management). The study, published in Production and Operations Management, analyzed 54,000+ authors (2008–2022) via Web of Science.

The Harvard Business Review article, “Does Returning to the Office Support Your Company’s Strategy?” co-authored by N. Sharon Hill, was named one of the top three HR & People Analytics articles of April 2025 in the HR Analytics newsletter, which reaches over 150,000 subscribers.

 

   Sports Management

Pothen Cherian, a student in the Master of Science in Sport Management program at the GW School of Business, has been named the Most Valuable Member of the Volunteer Intern program for the Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup, for his professionalism and tireless dedication in supporting T20 World Cup - USA Venues.

The GW Sport Management case team won another championship at the National Sports Forum in Boston, topping 12 schools nationwide. In just 24 hours, they developed a winning strategic plan for the NBA’s European expansion, which judges called a slam dunk! Congrats to Nina Tedesco, Juan Carlos Barreiro Palafox, Jette Davidson, and Pablo Dragnic!

Lisa Delpy Neirotti was profiled in "Teaching the Business of Sport" by Lois Elfman, published in Women in Higher Education (June 2025).

 

   Strategic Management and Public Policy

Vanessa Perry, M.B.A., Ph.D., interim dean and professor of marketing, strategic management and public policy, will be a panelist in a session titled “Transparency, Governance and Literacy Needed to Boost Public Trust in AI” at the National Fair Housing Conference in Washington, D.C.

SMPP Professor Emeritus Howard Beales recently provided expert testimony to congress. His testimony appeared before the Subcommittee on Innovation, Data, and Commerce of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, on Federal Trade Commission Practices: A Discussion on Past Versus Present. The testimony was based on the paper Prof. Beales wrote with Tim Muris on change eras at the FTC, contrasting current FTC leader Lina Khan with prior major changes in 1970 and 1980.

 

Recently, California Gov. Newsom signed into law a bill entitled "Protecting Our Kids from Social Media Addiction Act" (SB976). Drafts of the bill cited a Business Ethics Quarterly article by Vikram R. Bhargava, assistant professor of strategic management and public policy, entitled "Ethics of the Attention Economy: The Problem of Social Media Addiction" (w/M. Velasquez).

Vikram Bhargava, assistant professor of strategic management and public policy, was named an International Research Fellow for Oxford University's Centre for Corporate Reputation. Here is the list of current fellows and a description of the honor. This is by invitation and involves "leading scholars across a range of disciplines related to research into social evaluations."
