Young Hoon Kwak is an associate professor in the Department of Decision Sciences at the George Washington University School of Business (GWSB) in Washington, D.C. He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Engineering and Project Management as well as Management of Technology (MOT) Certificate, all from the University of California at Berkeley. He worked as a visiting engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a visiting professor at the Florida International University, a visiting scholar at the IPA Institute, and currently holds a visiting professor position at the department of business informatics and operations management in Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at Ghent University in Belgium.

Dr. Kwak is currently the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Management in Engineering and a specialty editor (associate editor) for the case studies section of the Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, both published by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), as well as the department editor for project management at the IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management. He also serves on the editorial board of the International Journal of Project Management, the International Journal of Managing Projects in Business, and the Journal of Construction Engineering and Project Management.

Dr. Kwak is a four-time recipient of research grants sponsored by the Project Management Institute (PMI), a three-time recipient of the IBM Center for The Business of Government’s research stipend, and a multi-year recipient of Construction Industry Institute (CII)'s research grant. He has received the 2023 International Project Management Association (IPMA) Global Research Award, 2021 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Richard R. Torrens Award, 2019 ASCE Journal of Management in Engineering's Best Peer Reviewed Paper Award, 2016 Outstanding Leadership Award from Korean American Construction, Engineering, and Project Management Association (KACEPMA), 2014 Best Paper in the track organized by IJPM in International Network of Business and Management (INBAM) Journals Conference, and 2008 International Project Management Association (IPMA) Outstanding Research Contributions Award.

Dr. Kwak has consulted and lectured worldwide with various organizations and companies and presented and published well over a hundred articles in journals, books, book chapters, magazines, and conference proceedings. His scholarly works appear in Production and Operations Management, California Management Review, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Journal of the Operational Research Society, Production Planning and Control, Technovation, IEEE Engineering Management Review, Technological and Economic Development of Economy, Government Information Quarterly, International Journal of Project Management, Project Management Journal, International Journal of Managing Projects in Business, Engineering Project Organization Journal, Risk Management: An International Journal, Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, Journal of Management in Engineering, Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering, Automation in Construction, Sustainability, Korean Management Review, and other prestigious academic outlets.

Dr. Kwak’s primary research interests include project and program management; project  control; and engineering/technology management.
