WASHINGTON, DC Feb 22, 2018 —A “TEDx Talk” delivered by Kirsten Martin, associate professor and chair, Department of Strategic Management & Public Policy, has racked up more than 20,000 views online.
Dr. Martin’s presentation, “It’s Not Their Story to Tell: Why Companies Should Respect Privacy Online,” was delivered at TEDx Charlottesville, 2017.
In the presentation, she discusses how our digital lives are often in conflict with our native expectations of the norms of personal privacy. From the video description on YouTube: “With every online interaction, we hand our right to privacy over a teaspoon at a time to any number of data collectors who have made it their mission and business to collate all our data and build a very reliable picture of who we are, what we like, where we go, and what we do.”
Dr. Martin researches privacy, technology and corporate responsibility. She has written about privacy and the ethics of technology in leading academic journals. She is regularly asked to speak on privacy and the ethics of "big data."
