Sanjay Jain is an associate industry professor in the Department of Decision Sciences at the School of Business at the George Washington University (GWU). At GWU, he has been primarily teaching graduate classes in the Master of Science in Project Management (MSPM), and other graduate programs including MBA, EMBA and MS in Business Analytics. He has also participated in delivering international executive programs in project management for GWU. Dr. Jain’s teaching has been recognized with the students selecting him as the recipient for the annual award of Outstanding Faculty in the MSPM Program for 5 times since 2019.
His research interests are in the development and application of decision science techniques to complex systems with focus on sustainable supply chains, smart manufacturing and project management. His research work at GWU has been supported by grants from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (technical arm of U.S. Department of Commerce) continuously for over 15 years that add up to over a million U.S. Dollars. He has received the Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Award two times.
Dr. Jain has over 100 publications including papers in technical journals and refereed conference proceedings, and technical reports. He has published in journals such as International Journal of Production Research, European Journal of Operational Research, and Smart and Sustainable Manufacturing Systems. He has presented his work at premier conferences in their respective disciplines including the Project Management Institute’s Research Conference and the Winter Simulation Conference.
Dr. Jain serves as a member of the editorial board of Smart and Sustainable Manufacturing Systems. He served as an associate editor of the International Journal of Simulation and Process Modeling for ten years (2004-2014) and as a member of the editorial board of International Journal of Industrial Engineering for 18 years (1999-2017). He also served as a co-editor of the Proceedings of 2010 Winter Simulation Conference and as the lead editor of the Proceedings of 2011 Winter Simulation Conference.
Dr. Jain has actively volunteered for the annual Winter Simulation Conference over multiple decades. He served as the Program Chair for 2018 Winter Simulation Conference held in December 2018 in Gothenburg, Sweden. He coordinated the technical papers process from call for papers to publication including reviews of 400+ technical papers and 100+ extended abstracts by 500+ reviewers, the conference website, and the development of the conference program and its execution at the conference, and oversaw publication and archival process of the program and conference proceedings. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Simulation Society of the Institute of Operations Research and Management Sciences (INFORMS) in 2023. The award recognizes sustained service to simulation community over a period longer than 15 years.
Professor Jain has been teaching at GWU since Fall 2005. Earlier he was a research faculty member at Grado Industrial & Systems Engineering Department at Virginia Tech for a few years. Before moving to academia, he accumulated over a dozen years of international R&D and consulting experience working at Accenture, Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology, and General Motors North American Operations Technical Center. He also served remotely as the Vice President of Research for the International School of Project Management in New Delhi for 2009-2013.
