Message From the Dean — Summer 2023

August 1, 2023

Dear GWSB Community,

I had forgotten how hot August can be in D.C.! I hope everyone is having a productive and restful summer — perhaps some time away as well. It is especially important for any students who are completing summer internships to take the time to refresh and recharge before the new semester begins!

Last month we bid a fond farewell to President Mark S. Wrighton and welcomed our new president, Dr. Ellen M. Granberg who officially joined GW on July 1. We are honored that President Granberg will be our first speaker for the fall season of “George Talks Business,” scheduled for September 6. You will not want to miss this session as we focus on her professional journey in academia and industry, her early impressions and discussions with the GW community, and what leadership means to her at this pivotal moment in higher education. President Granberg will also be attending our faculty and staff meeting on September 8.

For those who missed it, our latest George Talks Business was a fantastic summer session, with not one but three panelists in their “hot seats" debating the unintended consequences of AI and whether we can fight artificial intelligence with non-human intelligence.

Our faculty and staff colleagues’ plans are in full swing to welcome new and returning students to campus in the fall. Despite some dust and noise in the building, we cannot wait for our entire GW Business community to experience the new look and feel of Duquès Hall with technological advancements and upgrades to its physical infrastructure. Thanks to the generous support of the Duquès family, the first and the sixth floors of Duquès Hall will soon be among the most modern facilities on campus! With the finishing touches completed in the coming weeks, the Great Hall Entrance Foyer area will be fully reopened. Classrooms 151, 152, and 250 will be available for use by the first day of classes on August 24 (renovations will continue in classrooms 651 and 652).

Later this fall, we will host a visit from our Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) Continuous Improvement Review team. Taking place between November 12-14, the review will be led by Dr. Margaret L. Williams, dean of the Jerry S. Rawls College of Business at Texas Tech University, and Dr. William W. Holder, dean and Alan Casden Dean's Chair at the University of Southern California Leventhal School of Accounting. Our AACSB report reflects a continued positive trajectory that we have worked together to achieve.

On the topic of positive trajectories, in addition to congratulating our Class of 2023 graduates from May, we also recognized recent graduates of two programs which both reflect our unique partnerships in the community and our ability to make a meaningful difference in society. Please join me in another congratulations to the third cohort of graduates from ELEVATE (Executive Leadership Education Venture Advancing Talented Entrepreneurs) program as well as the first cohort of graduates from our MBA in Security Technology Transition (MBA-STT) program.

I hope everyone enjoys the rest of the summer. I look forward to seeing you on campus!

Stay safe and stay well,
