Message From the Dean — April 2019

April 25, 2019

Dear GWSB Community,

Recently, I shared with you exciting news about the new graduate program offerings, lifelong learning opportunities, and community building initiatives that we are undertaking at the School of Business to improve and enhance the GWSB student experience, increase the value of a GWSB degree, and create meaningful ways for alumni to stay engaged and stay current!

As an example, our George Talks Business series has really taken off and we’ve seen wonderful alumni engagement — as guests and as viewers! Our most recent guest was Dr. Kristalina Georgieva, CEO of the World Bank on the subject of “Global Business Doing Global Good.” Upcoming guests include a panel of Dean’s Advisory Council members (Christine Brown-Quinn, Carrie Potter, Isabella Zhang, and Mitch Blaser) discussing women’s leadership, Romero Britto (Miami-based artist and entrepreneur) discussing “The Business of Art,” and Christine Lagarde (managing director, IMF) in a conversation with Professor Danny Leipziger. Please join us, either in person or online!

Our next step is to focus on enhancing positive career-search and career-management outcomes for GWSB students and alumni. We are looking forward to welcoming Mark Strassman, the new executive director of the F. David Fowler Career Center, who will be leading these efforts in concert with the entire GWSB community, as well as with the business community at large.

Some specific initiatives to ensure better career preparedness and more career opportunities for our students include:

  • Industry-specific Mentorship – Based on the successful Mentoring & Immersion Program for Consulting (MIPC) and Real Estate and Finance Alliance (REFA) programs, our goal is to ensure that as many students as possible have access to expert, professional guidance from mentors working in their chosen career fields.
  • Dean’s Corporate Council – An advisory roundtable of local business leaders, including our recruiting partners, corporate supporters, and alumni, that will meet with us periodically to ensure that GWSB, its curriculum, faculty and students are kept up-to-date on the latest developments and trends in the “real world” of business and to bridge the gap between students and potential employers.
  • George Learns Business – In an effort to provide students and alumni with a web-accessible repository of career resources, we will develop a series of brief online tutorials, interviews and instructional videos that offer viewers practical career-related knowledge and advice from seasoned professionals across industries.

In the meantime, I’d be remiss if I didn’t send a heartfelt congratulations to the scores of GWSB students who competed in this year’s New Venture Competition. I am very proud of all of them. Special kudos to the Viva Vita team (comprised of GWSB seniors Carleigh Berryman, Julianna Yee, Dylan Tally, and Dakota Sinder) for being a finalist in the competition.

Please remember, we always welcome (and need) continued input. I’d love to hear from you. See you around campus!

All the best,
