The Global Financial Literacy Excellence Center (GFLEC) has issued a “call for papers” for the 5th Cherry Blossom Financial Education Institute, which will be held on Thursday and Friday, April 11-12, 2019, at the GW School of Business. A $5,000 research award will be given for the best paper submitted.

The institute welcomes research addressing all types of financial education: programs in primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities, workplaces and other venues. It is most interested in papers that assess the effectiveness of financial education and its influence on financial behavior and other outcomes. Academic faculty and researchers in economics and related fields studying financial education are encouraged to submit papers, as are advanced Ph.D students.

The deadline to submit papers is February 1, 2019. Please send your paper to [email protected].

The event will begin the afternoon of Thursday, April 11 with a half day of presentations followed by a private dinner for the presenters. The institute will continue with a full day of presentations on Friday, April 12 and will conclude late that afternoon. Travel expenses and accommodations, up to a limit, will be covered for authors of papers accepted for presentation. This coverage includes two nights of lodging for domestic authors and three nights of lodging for international authors. Invited participants are encouraged to enjoy the city’s famous cherry blossom season during their stay.

Annamaria Lusardi, Denit Trust Chair of Economics & Accountancy, is the academic director of GFLEC. The Cherry Blossom Financial Education Institute is modelled after the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) Summer Institute, where researchers are invited to present their work in progress and interact with scholars in their field. The objectives of the Institute are to provide an ongoing forum for presentation and discussion of financial education research, with the aim of promoting excellent work in this field, and to foster research that can inform policy and help identify effective financial education programs.
