Founded in 1950, the Department of Accountancy has a long tradition of preparing students for careers in accounting, financial management, and taxation across the public and private sectors. Combining a strong academic foundation with a global perspective, the department equips students with the analytical skills and professional insight needed in today’s complex business environment.

Bachelor of Science in Accountancy

Build a strong foundation in accounting while developing expertise in auditing, financial statement analysis, budgeting, and planning through project-based, real-world coursework led by experienced faculty.

Master of Accountancy in Accountancy

Coursework spans financial reporting, accounting procedures, auditing, taxation, budgeting, forensic accounting, and financial statement analysis, with an emphasis on statistical methods and theory drawn from finance, economics, and strategy—preparing students for professional certification as a CPA.

MACC in Accountancy  

Master of Accountancy in Accounting Analytics

Strengthen traditional accounting expertise while advancing data analytics skills through applied coursework in financial analysis, planning, budgeting, auditing, and the use of programming and statistical models to analyze large datasets in this STEM-designated program.

MACC in Accounting Analytics  

Ph.D in Business with an Accountancy Area of Focus

Engage in a highly collaborative doctoral experience, working alongside expert faculty and peers in Washington, D.C., to develop new insights that advance accounting scholarship and practice.

PhD: Accounting  

The GW Business 4+1 Program enables students to earn both a Bachelor of Accountancy and a Master of Accountancy in just five years.

Cherry Blossom Conference

For more than 10 years, the annual Cherry Blossom Conference, hosted in April, brings together scholars in accounting research to the nation’s capital. Students closely engage with a wide variety of speakers and scholars who discuss the current trends and evolution of the accounting industry.

Employment

The Department of Accountancy has part-time positions available each semester. Students in accounting or a related major may apply for these positions. For details, please contact deptaccyatgwu [dot] edu (deptaccy[at]gwu[dot]edu)

Some employers contact the Department of Accountancy directly to recruit students. Those positions will be posted on the department's bulletin board on the 6th floor of Funger Hall.

Academic Policy -- Waiver of Credits

Credits for accounting courses can be waived for Intro Financial Accounting and Intro Managerial Accounting. The courses should be taken at institutions accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). View the list of AACSB accredited schools.

Submit your waiver of credit request with the full syllabus of the course (not the course description) to deptaccyatgwu [dot] edu (deptaccy[at]gwu[dot]edu).

Waiver approval is not guaranteed; approval should be obtained before registering at the other institution.
