Dear GWSB Community,
As the Thanksgiving holiday is upon us, I want to express my gratitude for what we have accomplished together.
It is especially appropriate for GW to celebrate Thanksgiving, as it was officially designated a national holiday in 1789 by our namesake. So, please allow me to say that I am very thankful to know each of you, and for how you make GWSB the special place it is.
As the end of the semester draws near and faculty and students prepare to wrap up classes and get ready for finals, I wanted to share some recent GWSB news highlights from what’s been a very productive first half of the 2019-20 academic year:
Significant Rankings Jump for MBA Programs
GWSB’s MBA Programs climbed 10 places to #53, up from #63 in 2018, in the annual Poets & Quants ranking released this week.
GW Named Among the Best Graduate Schools for Entrepreneurs
The George Washington University was ranked among the “Top 25 Best Graduate Schools for Entrepreneurs in 2020” by Entrepreneur Magazine/The Princeton Review. Citing the university’s “entrepreneurial ecosystem,” the ranking mentioned GWSB’s graduate certificate program in Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, GW’s Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Center for Entrepreneurial Excellence, as well as the Pitch George and New Venture competitions. GW was the only D.C.-metro area university to be listed in the top 25.
Congratulations to our faculty, students, staff, and especially our alumni, who have gone on to make their mark in the business world through their entrepreneurial skills and spirit.
GW Professors Earn Prestigious Honors
Herman Aguinis, Avram Tucker Distinguished Scholar, professor of management, and chairperson of the Department of Management, was named to the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science Group annual list of highly cited researchers. The list identifies scientists and social scientists who produced multiple papers in the past decade ranking in the top one percent by citations for their field and year of publication, demonstrating significant research influence among their peers. Dr. Aguinis earned his place among the elite group of 6,216 researchers from nearly 60 nations and across 21 scientific fields as one of the 116 most influential business and economics researchers in the world.
Miguel Lejeune, professor of decisions sciences, was named winner of 2019 Institute for Operations Research and the Management Science (INFORMS) Koopman Prize. Dr. Lejeune (with Francois Margot) was honored for the article, “Aeromedical Battlefield Evacuation Under Endogenous Uncertainty in Casualty Delivery Times,” published in Management Science in 2018. The prize is named after Bernard Koopman, a founding father of military operations research, and is awarded for the outstanding publication in military operations research of the previous year.
These accomplishments of our world-class faculty exemplify GWSB’s commitment to research excellence and enhance our reputation as a preeminent research institution.
Welcome New Staff Leaders
I am pleased to announce that we have added two senior staff leaders: Richard Goldstein as AVP of development and Mary Catherine Chase as director of marketing and communications. Please join me in welcoming them!
Representing the Buff-and-Blue in China
At GWSB, we take considerable pride in being an international institution with an international focus. We are committed to welcoming the world to our campus and to going out into the world. Last month, I had the opportunity to do the latter and visit China to promote GWSB and meet with alumni and Chinese business leaders in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. During the trip, I sat for an in-depth interview on CGTN news about U.S. demand for skilled immigrant workers and GW’s outstanding record on recruiting, enrolling and welcoming international students into our world-class programs, and, of course, enjoyed a visit to the Great Wall.
While in China, we produced our first overseas episode of George Talks Business, with guest Dr. Xinya Vivian Wang, founding partner of Beautiful Mind Capital. (Special thanks to Isabella Zhang, BBA ’14, senior associate at Ernst & Young, and GWSB Board of Advisors member, for co-moderating the session and helping arrange a terrific visit to Shanghai for the GWSB delegation.)
Last week we wrapped up our fall season of GTB with our season finale featuring Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser. We will be announcing our spring semester schedule of sessions soon.
Again, whether you are gathering with friends and family here in D.C. or traveling to be with them for the holiday — or an international student experiencing this most American of holidays — please have a happy, healthy and safe Thanksgiving!
See you around campus!
All the best,
Anuj Mehrotra, Ph.D.
