Message From the Dean — May 2022

May 2, 2022

Dear GWSB Community,

One of the great joys of being dean is leading Commencement Celebrations for the School of Business. This year is especially dear to me as one of my daughters will also become a graduate of GW.

This year we have exceptional speakers at our ceremonies:

  • Elana Meyers Taylor (MTA ‘11) will deliver the keynote address at the university’s commencement ceremony on May 15 on the National Mall.
  • W. Russell Ramsey (BBA ‘81) will provide the keynote address for our GW Business Undergraduate Celebration on May 12 in the Charles E. Smith Center.
  • Mariam Zara (BBA ‘22) will be our student speaker for our GW Business Undergraduate Celebration on May 12 in the Charles E. Smith Center.
  • Christine Brown-Quinn (MBA ‘92) will provide the keynote address for our GW Business Master’s and Doctoral Celebration on May 13 in the Charles E. Smith Center.
  • Shadane Ferraro (MTA ‘22) will be our student speaker for our GW Business Master’s and Doctoral Celebration on May 13 in the Charles E. Smith Center.

I am excited to kick-off the celebration with an exclusive event for our GWSB Class of 2022. Graduating students, faculty and staff: please ensure that you RSVP by tomorrow night to join in the fun this Thursday evening, May 5!

We say commencement as a word that implies fruition and completion since it’s a time of reflection and conveys a deep sense of accomplishment. However, commencement is about beginnings. And, whether you are walking across the stage next week or you are here for more education, the summer semester is also a time of commencement for all of us.

Many of our students will fulfill career goals through competitive internships here, across the U.S. and around the world. While some faculty will be teaching this summer, others will be engaging in research and providing their expertise to advance the knowledge and use of their discipline.

Several of our students are commencing the next phase of their entrepreneurial journey following success at the New Venture Competition last month. We are #GWSBproud of all of the students that competed, but want to provide special recognition to the winning GWSB students:

  • Clebby’s - Sabrina Clebnik (GWSB ‘22): #1 New Venture and Best Food and Beverage Venture
  • POP! - Anna Shah (GWSB ‘24): #2 Social Venture, Best Undergraduate Price, Best Financials Prize and Viewers’ Choice
  • Lope Tree -  Ruth Dwyer (GWSB ‘23) and Lauren Servin (GWSB ‘24): #3 Social Venture and Quinn Prize for Social & International Entrepreneurship
  • ByLil - Lily Khosrowshahi (GWSB ‘22): #3 New Venture
  • Narrative - Trevor Doucet (GWSB ‘22), Chelsea Sutch (GWSB ‘22) and Olivia Wilcox (GWSB ‘22): #4 Tech Venture

As we commence the summer, I wish everyone a rewarding and enjoyable time studying, researching, interning, traveling and working.

Stay safe and stay well,
