Dr. Ravi Achrol, PhD

Interim Associate Dean for Research & Doctoral Studies • Professor of Marketing

The Doctor of Philosophy is the highest degree a university confers.  It is a revered distinction in society because it symbolizes wisdom, not just learning.  The original Greek meaning of “philosophy” is “love of wisdom”. That is what we look for in our students—a thirst for deep understanding that takes them beyond knowledge to become creators of knowledge.

A Ph. D. is a research degree that demands a tremendous commitment of intellect and time. It demands the ability to master advanced analytical methodologies, a large scientific literature in a field, and the intellectual curiosity that leads to discovery and new knowledge.

What is special about doctoral studies at the George Washington University School of Business? Washington DC is a cosmopolitan, political and economic crossroads with a very large community of thought leaders, government research agencies, prominent think tanks, and institutions like the World Bank. As we like to phrase it, we are located “at the center of it all,” just a few blocks from the White House. Our distinguished faculty and student body are among the most globally diverse anywhere.  We welcome would be scholars from around the world to come nurture their minds in the pursuit of wisdom in a global academic environment.
