MSBA Admission

Qualifications & Prerequisites


  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Strong academic performance
  • Demonstrated professional interest in business analytics


Successful applicants to GWSB’s MSBA program will have exposure and experience* in the following areas:

  • Statistics
    Applicants should have taken and obtained a B or higher in an undergraduate or graduate statistics course within the last five years, be able to demonstrate regular use of statistics in a current or past professional position, or be able to demonstrate an adequate understanding of statistics in another way.

  • Higher Level Mathematics (Calculus and Linear Algebra)
    In general, students should be able to demonstrate regular use of mathematics principles and methods and an adequate understanding of calculus and basic linear algebra. Applicants should have taken and obtained a B or higher in undergraduate or graduate level Calculus classes, including Calculus I (MATH1231) and Calculus II (equivalent to MATH1232). In addition, students are expected to have had some academic exposure to topics in Linear Algebra and Finite Math (equivalent to MATH1051).

  • Computer Programming
    Applicants should be able to demonstrate adequate exposure to and understanding of basic computer programming and software principles. Applicants do not need to have a specific understanding of analytics-based computer programs and software. Instead, the goal is for applicants to demonstrate that they are capable of learning the specific programs emphasized in the MSBA program.

*Applicants may satisfy the above prerequisites through an online offering such as Coursera.

Online Application Requirements

To be considered complete, the following must be included in the online application:

  • Completed online application with non-refundable application fee

  • Current résumé uploaded through the online application system; résumés should highlight any academic or professional experience related to analytics

  • Two letters of recommendation from professional and/or academic references

  • Statement of career objectives - In no more than 500 words, describe your career objectives and how the MSBA program will help you meet those objectives

Additional Application Requirements

  • Transcripts: All admitted students will be required to submit official, sealed academic transcripts with proof of their bachelor’s degree. There is no need to submit transcripts at the time when you first apply; you may do so after admission. Once admitted, please submit transcripts from all of the colleges and/or universities you have attended, whether or not a degree program was completed or the credits appear as transfer credits on another transcript.

    International applicants should upload the English-language version of their transcripts or a copy of a credentialed evaluation. For a list of acceptable foreign credential evaluation services, please visit

  • Interview: Candidates may be invited to a brief interview.

  • GMAT Score or GRE Score: Test date must be within past five years. GMAT code: QK4-4F-40; GRE code: 5246

International Applicants

  • English language evaluation*
    Applicants who have not completed a degree in a country in which English is the principal language must submit one of the following: an official TOEFL score of at least 80 (internet-based test) or 550 (paper-based test), an official IELTS score of 6.0 with no individual band score below 5.5, a PTE Academic Score of at least 53, or a Duolingo English Test (DTE) Score of at least 110.   • Transcript evaluation
    All students who attended an institution outside of the United States must provide a detailed, course-by-course transcript evaluation. This evaluation is not just an English translation, but a document provided by an accredited evaluating agency that shows all grades, course titles, credit hours, United States degree equivalency, grade-point average (GPA), and date of degree conferral. A list of acceptable foreign credential evaluation services is available through the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). Credentials evaluations are also accepted from the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO).
  • STEM designation
    The GW MSBA degree is a STEM-designated degree program. International students of the MSBA program are eligible for up to a 24-month extension (36 months total) for their OPT upon graduation.
  • 4-Year Bachelor Degree
    The GW MSBA program cannot consider applicants with 3-year bachelor degrees unless they have completed a minimum of one year of subsequent graduate education.

*Not required if you have received a subsequent degree from an accredited university in the United States or Canada.


Application Deadlines

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Candidates seeking financial assistance and international students requiring visas are encouraged to apply early. Only completed applications, with all required materials, will be considered for admission.
