MBA Admission Process

Applying to business school may seem overwhelming, but the GWSB admissions team is here to help. As you complete your MBA application, our admissions staff is ready to provide you with the support you may need. While we cannot provide evaluative feedback during the application process, please don’t hesitate to contact our office with questions about completing your application.

Admission Process

The MBA application process for all MBA degree formats can be described in three steps:

1. Learn About Graduate Admissions at GWSB

Familiarize yourself with our general graduate admissions application process.

2. Begin Your Application

Review the application requirements checklist, then begin your online application and submit all supporting application materials. You may make changes and edits to your application at any time prior to submission. Once submitted, your application will be reviewed only after the admissions office has received all supporting application materials.

Below are additional requirements and waiver opportunities for our MBA program.

Admissions Essay

In no more than 500 words, tell us why studying at the GW School of Business (GWSB) is the program best suited for you and your academic interests, and explain how you will leverage both your past professional career and future academic experience at GW to achieve your post-MBA aspirations.

GMAT or GRE Score Waiver

A GMAT/GRE score report is required as part of the application process for all MBA Programs at GW. However, upon request, a waiver for this requirement will be considered for applicants to our part-time MBA programs (Professional, Accelerated/Cohort, Online, and Healthcare). Those part-time MBA applicants with over three years of relevant, professional, full-time work experience may apply for this waiver.

Evaluation of relevant experience is at the discretion of the admissions committee. Several factors are considered in the review of a waiver request, including the rigor of prior undergraduate and graduate coursework, academic performance, evidence of quantitative and analytical skills, prior work experience, current job responsibilities, and professional certifications.

To request a waiver, please provide a brief summary that outlines why you believe you are qualified for the test score waiver along with your resume and unofficial copies of academic transcripts. Please note that a GMAT/GRE waiver is NOT automatic and an approved waiver request does not guarantee admission to the program.

Quantitative Aptitude

Candidates without previous undergraduate or graduate quantitative course work, strong quantitative skills displayed on the GMAT or GRE test, or quantitative centered professional experience, may be asked to demonstrate their abilities by taking a class (such as calculus) at an accredited institution prior to beginning MBA coursework.

3. Attend an Interview

The School of Business conducts interviews by invitation for GMBA programs. Interviews are granted on an invitation-only basis. The Admission Committee may contact you to schedule an interview, after we have completed a preliminary evaluation of your submitted application. The Admission Committee interviews a significant number of applicants and may decide, at any point during a round, to invite candidates to interview.

The interview is an important evaluative component of the application process and is conducted by a member of the Admission Committee. Typically, interviews are 30-40 minutes in length.

Decisions are posted on a rolling basis, and individuals are encouraged to apply early for consideration.

For those who have a strong interest in our MBA programs, we readily encourage you to re-apply to GWSB, regardless of past admission decisions. You may submit one application per program entry term.

Our most successful re-applicants include those who have made significant improvements to test scores, advanced within their careers, or displayed marked improvement in areas of leadership and community involvement.

The Graduate Admissions Office keeps all records on file for one year.
