Ph.D. in Business With a Marketing Area of Focus

Admission Standards

The marketing Ph.D. program trains students for academic research careers at leading business schools. Applicants are expected to have completed a bachelor’s degree at a four-year accredited college or university and to have attained an undergraduate record that satisfies the standards established by the George Washington University School of Business (GWSB). A prior business degree is not a requirement. Students with backgrounds in fields such as psychology, sociology, economics and statistics typically have a good foundation for a Ph.D. in marketing, but we seek the best applicants without regard for departmental affiliation. However, if a student has no business coursework, they must consult with the program coordinator about additional coursework in business that may be necessary, on a case-by-case basis, at the discretion of the graduate advisor.

Applicants will be required to submit official GMAT or GRE exam scores. The admissions committee considers the quality of the applicant’s academic record, fit of research interests, and interest in and understanding of an academic career in marketing. The department considers the strongest applicants to be those with scores in the 90th percentile in verbal and math. However, we may consider students with somewhat lower scores who demonstrate a keen understanding of the research process and come with prior graduate training or research experience that indicates they are likely to be successful in a Ph.D. program.
