Volunteer Student Intern Opportunities
Note: This is a volunteer or for-credit internship.
Background: The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, DC is seeking undergraduate and graduate students for internships in the Division of Risk, Strategy, and Financial Innovation (RSFI). RSFI integrates financial economics and data analytics to the core mission of the SEC. In doing so, RSFI is involved in the entire range of SEC activities, including policy-making, rule-making, enforcement and examination.
RSFI is offering unpaid training opportunities to undergraduate/graduate students in the Washington, DC area. Qualified students will be studying economics, finance, or a related quantitative field (mathematics, statistics); have experience analyzing data using Excel, SAS, Matlab, or Stata; be knowledgeable about securities and derivative products, and understand how financial markets operate. Alternatively, previous consulting experience and expertise in process mapping is desired.
The internship introduces qualified students to the regulation of securities markets and the work of the Commission. Positions are available in the following offices within RSFI: Office of Investments and Intermediaries, Office of Markets, Office of Litigation Support, Office of Corporate Finance, Office of the Managing Executive, and Office of the Deputy Director.
The SEC considers your entire background when it evaluates applications. Selections are made based on many elements, including high academic qualifications and preferably some knowledge of or a significant interest in the securities industry. Selection criteria include: a demonstrated interest in the SEC's mission; coursework, work experience, and/or research projects/publications relevant to RSFI; dedication to public service; and participation in extracurricular activities. Securities coursework is not a prerequisite.

• Currently enrolled in an accredited academic program. Verification will be required.
• Students must have completed one year of undergraduate study by the beginning of the fall semester.
• Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5. We highly recommend that students have a 3.0 GPA or higher.

There are some big changes happening with the staff here at the GWSB Undergraduate Programs office! This month, we will be featuring an interview with our newest member on the Advising team, Andrea Cappello. She recently sat down with Usama Khan, one of our Student Development Specialists, to chat a bit about her background and why she is so excited to join us on the GWSB Undergraduate Programs staff.
Usama: Where do you hail from?
Andrea: Hackettstown, NJ (Fun fact: It's where the headquarters for M&M Mars is located!)
U: Where did you attend college? What did you study and why?
A: I attended The College of New Jersey in Ewing, NJ where I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English/Secondary Education. I chose TCNJ because of its strong education program, as well as the study abroad opportunities that were offered. I then went on to graduate school at the University of South Florida where I earned a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in College Student Affairs. I chose USF because I wanted to experience living in a different part of the country and have an opportunity to interact with a more diverse group of individuals.
U: Where else have you worked?
A: After graduating college, I initially taught high school English for two years and then tutored at Centenary College before I moved to Florida to attend graduate school. During my time at USF, I worked as a graduate assistant for a first-generation scholarship program housed under the Honors College.
U: Why GWSB?
A: GWSB stood out to me most because of the people. I was absolutely blown away by how welcoming and truly interested everyone was during my interview. It was obvious that each and every person here is invested in giving GW students the best experience possible through advising, programming, and teaching. This is a community of which I knew I wanted to be a part.
U: What do you hope to bring/contribute to GWSB as a Student Experience Advisor?
A: I hope that my background in teaching can assist in making the FYDP course curriculum more robust, and that my passion for study abroad will encourage more students to branch out and explore areas of the world they have never been to before.
U: Where do you see yourself in the future?
A: While I have many interests within the field of the higher education, I hope to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to work in a study abroad or international student services office in the future. My current role as an Undergraduate Student Experience Advisor will certainly help me start to work towards that long-term goal. I would also like to continue my education in a few years by pursuing a Ph.D.
U: Have you studied abroad yourself?
A: I studied abroad for a semester in my junior at the Institute for American Universities in Aix-en-Provence, France. I was fortunate enough to live with a host family so I was really immersed in the language and culture. It was definitely one of the most life-changing experiences I have had thus far and also where my current passion for study abroad stems from.
U: Tell us something interesting about yourself!
A: In my free time, I love doing outdoor activities: hiking, kayaking, camping, biking, etc. My favorite ice cream flavor is mint chocolate chip and I could eat Mexican food any night of the week! I've recently gotten hooked on watching "Revenge" and "Once Upon a Time." Though watching "Friends" re-runs never gets old! While my Pandora radio stations span a pretty broad variety of music, some of my favorites include Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, and Michael Franti and Spearhead.
U: Anything else you'd like to say to the GWSB community?
A: In my first few weeks here, I have been absolutely amazed by how helpful and welcoming everyone has been. It's not easy to pick up your life and move to a new city, as I'm sure many GWSB students can attest; however, I know I'm in the right place and am looking forward to getting to know everyone in the GWSB community better.
About the REU Program:
The Research Experience for Undergraduates program in the School of Business cultivates and supports research partnerships between undergraduate students and School of Business faculty members. The REU program provides opportunities for undergraduate students to work as part of the team on a faculty member's research project or to participate in a case competition requiring intensive research. The REU program engages undergraduates fully in the learning process and enables them to gain an appreciation of the role of research in business. For the academic year 2011-2012, we have 19 undergraduate students participating in the program working with 16 faculty members on diverse research projects.
The Office of Undergraduate Programs is accepting REU applications from GWSB faculty members and undergraduate students for academic year 2012-2013. New REU Positions:
Professor Eun-Hee Kim is currently looking for a student researcher to assist her on the topic of:
How do frequent interactions with external stakeholders affect the extent of symbolic management by organizations?
The rapid development of social media, such as Twitter and Facebook, has allowed organizations to interact frequently with external stakeholders. A growing number of firms use social media to manage their core business functions, for example, to promote their products, to expand distribution channels, or to manage customer service on a continuous basis, which was not possible with old ways of communication. Increasingly, firms also use social media to publicize their CSR-related activities including environmental sustainability. This project aims to understand how the latter relates to symbolic management practices by organizations. This will enable us to bring in the concept of frequency of interaction to the literature on symbolic management.
Preferred Student Qualifications:
Preferred candidates should be detail-oriented and hard-working. The research assistant will be asked to do data collection on large companies’ Twitter accounts (maybe Facebook, too). Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and prior data collection skills preferred.
Professor Paul Swierczis looking for a student to help him with a case study on the Peace Corps:
Research in support of a case on staffing policies of the Peace Corps.
Working Title: Peace Corps.: The Shortest Career You Will Ever Love. The Peace Corp is unique because is has a strict limit on the length of appointments for professional staff. We will investigate the origins of this policy and its consequence for Peace Corps performance.

Professor Edward Cherian PHD is looking for a student to help him continue his Healthcare IT research in the Spring of 2013.

The George Washington University requires all incoming Freshman students to participate in a summer reading program, and students enrolled in the School of Business have additional reading assignments. This year, all Freshman students University wide are required to read War, by Sebastian Junger, a New York Times Bestseller.
In addition, GWSB students are required to read Pour Your Heart Into It: How Starbucks Built a Company One Cup at a Time, by Howard Schultz, Chairman and CEO of Starbucks. These books will prepare incoming students to think critically during their studies at GW. These books will be integrated into the First Year Development Program, which all GWSB Freshmen take.
For rising Sophomores and Juniors, two other courses for the Fall '12 semester have new required summer reading. Students enrolled in the fall semesters for BADM 2003W, Analysis of Business Issues, and BADM 3001, Career Management Strategy, have required reading, and received information regarding the programs via email. These required summer readings and assignments are designed to establish links between Liberal Arts and Business education, and foster a higher learning experience.

If you are planning to take classes at GW, registration is currently open for Summer Session II, which begins Thursday, July 5. Go here to access the Summer 2012 calendar for summer session dates. If you register for a Second Summer Session class and later decide not to take it, you must drop the class through Banweb before the first day of that session in order to avoid financial penalty.
If you are interested in taking summer classes at another university, please talk with your advisor to insure that option is available to you.
