Announcing FINA 4001 Advanced Financial Management, a 6-week course in Summer Session I starting May 15, 2011. This is a distance education (online) 100% case study finance course, requiring the core courses in accounting and finance. Students headed for internships and job interviews benefit from taking this course as Juniors. It was piloted last summer; we learned that a case study course works via distance when the students and professor are aligned in their expectations. Enrollment is limited.

Announcing FINA 3101 Investment and Portfolio Management, a summer course meeting between May 17 and June 23, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:30-5:40pm. This course covers institutional details of the U.S. stock market, modern portfolio theory and its applications, and the valuation of stocks, bonds, and options. Examples of questions that the course addresses include:
- What are the rewards and risks of individual stocks and stock mutual funds?
- How is the value of the Dow Jones Industrial Average determined in practice?
- How should an investor find his or her ‘optimal’ portfolio?
- What is the ‘fair’ P/E ratio of the U.S. stock market?
- Do active portfolio managers beat stock indices?
- What are the rewards and risks of individual bonds and bond mutual funds?
- What are the risks of and the motivation for using options?

The Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program allows students to work as a research assistant on a faculty members research project. Currently there are two opportunities available. Application and more information available HERE.
1) Corporate Social Responsiblity in the Hotel Industry
Faculty Advisor: Stuart Levy
This project will allow our REU research assistant to gain an intimate understanding of sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR) issues within the hospitality industry. In this research, my co-author (from the University of San Francisco) and I are currently working on a study tentatively titled, “Researching Corporate Social Responsibility in the Lodging Industry: Where We Have Been and Where We Are Going.” We are also working on a study examining stakeholder (e.g., hotel managers, employees and guests) perspectives of CSR activities at the hotel property level. The purpose of this research is to gain a better understanding of CSR from academic, practitioner, and consumer perspectives. This research is important given the increased visibility of CSR in the hotel industry, and given there has been little previous research focused in this area. We plan for these studies to be presented at hospitality conferences as well as be published in academic journals.
The REU research assistant will be involved in reviewing the academic literature on sustainability and CSR issues in hotels, in order to document and categorize aspects of each article such as the methodology employed, major findings, and future research proposed. The research assistant will also be involved in survey development and administrative tasks for our CSR stakeholder survey.
Preferred Student Qualifications:
· Interest in corporate social responsibility and sustainability issues
· Strong analytical ability
· Detail oriented
· English language reading comprehension (high-level)
· Power point presentation skills
