Nominations Requested: Outstanding Undergraduate Faculty

Each year the GWSB Office of Undergraduate Programs presents the Outstanding Undergraduate Faculty Award to a GWSB faculty member in recognition of outstanding contributions to undergraduate education. Attributes possessed by the award winning professor may include, but are not limited to:

  • Challenged and inspired students in or out of the classroom
  • Mentored students
  • Created excitement about the professor's field of expertise
  • Overall, provided students with an outstanding educational experience

You are invited to nominate a faculty member you believe to be worthy of this award. To nominate a professor, please send a brief essay of no longer than one page via e-mail to ugradbus@gwu.edu by 5:00pm on Monday, April 16, 2012.

2012 Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Annual Symposium

About the REU Program:
The Research Experience for Undergraduate program in the School of Business cultivates and supports research partnerships between undergraduate students and School of Business faculty members. The REU program provides opportunities for undergraduate students to work as part of the team on a faculty member's research project or to participate in a case competition requiring intensive research. The REU program engages undergraduates fully in the learning process and enables them to gain an appreciation of the role of research in business. For the academic year 2011-2012, we have 19 undergraduate students participating in the program working with 16 faculty members on diverse research projects.

The REU Annual Symposium is a showcase of students' research accomplishments and appreciation for our faculty mentors. The Symposium will be broken into two sections - the first hour will feature a poster session and reception, each REU student has prepared a poster describing his/her research overview, project goals, data, and results; the remaining two hours will be designated for REU student presentations.

Challenges in Corporate Governance: Executive Compensation

The Institute for Corporate Responsibility (ICR) at the GW Business School is pleased to announce the next program in its ongoing series on Challenges in Corporate Governance. The program will be sponsored jointly by ICR and C-LEAF, The Center for Law, Economics, and Finance at the GW Law School. How does a Board compensate executives that run the company into the ground? Why does a Board compensate executives that perform poorly? The program will focus on Corporate Directors’ Role in setting executive compensation, with particular emphasis on “pay-for-performance” initiatives and the issues addressed in public companies’ Compensation Disclosure and Analysis that is required in their annual proxy form.

Registration for Summer & Fall Classes is Coming!

Registration for summer classes opens on Monday, April 9, for all students.

Registration for fall classes begins on Tuesday, April 10, based on number of hours already completed; this does NOT include the classes you are taking this semester. For a schedule of when you should register, visit the Registrar's Website.

All students are strongly encouraged to meet with their advisor well in advance of their registration date. Advising appointments fill up quickly during the registration period, so don't procrastinate!

Express Registration Advising begins Wednesday, April 4 and continues through Wednesday, April 18:

  • 9:30 am - 12:30 pm: express advising; no appointment needed
  • 2:00 - 5:30 pm: express advising by appointment

New York Career Trek Planning Committee Applications

Calling all former New York Trek participants! Want to gain leadership experience while contributing to the continued success of the program? Then apply for a position on the New York Career Trek Planning Committee.

The New York Career Trek will take place Wednesday, November 7, 2012 to Friday, November 9, 2012.

GW Women in Business Spring Conference

Join us for the third annual GW Women in Business (GWWIB) Spring Conference on Saturday, April 21, 2012, in Duques and Funger Halls at The George Washington University. 

Keynote speakers include Princess Yasmine Pahlavi, Founder of The Foundation for the Children of Iran; Bobbie Lloyd, President and Chief Baking Officer of Magnolia Bakery; and Alexis Maybank, Founder and Chief Marketing Officer of Gilt Groupe.  

The conference will feature ten industry-focused panel discussions with thought leaders in finance, consulting, marketing and advertising, sports management, food and restaurants, fashion, event planning, technology, law and policy, and media. Following an afternoon networking luncheon, attendees will participate in personal and career development workshops on topics such as mentorship, entrepreneurship, social media, diversity, business style, and philanthropy.

The conference is open to women and men of all ages. Tickets must be purchased in advance and include conference admission, breakfast, lunch, and dessert, a conference "swag" bag, and a signed copy of By Invitation Only, a new book by Gilt Groupe founders Alexis Maybank and Alexandra Wilkis Wilson. 


Mentor For a Day Program: Now Accepting Applications for Mentors

On Thursday, April 12th, The GW School of Business Undergraduate Programs will host DCPS student achievers from Anacostia HS, Ballou HS, Eastern HS, HD Woodson HS, and Spingarn HS. GWSB undergraduate student mentors will facilitate a day of academic and professional workshops in an effort to support the work of DCPS teachers and administrators in preparing these students for future success. A networking reception will conclude the day's activities. 

We are currently accepting applications from students who are interested in participating in the event as a mentor. Please submit a completed application and your resume to: allatham@gwmail.gwu.edu. Make a Difference in the Learning and Lives of
First-Year GWSB Students!

The Office of Undergraduate Programs is accepting applications for undergraduate students interested in serving as mentors for our 2012-2013 First Year Development Program (FYDP). FYDP is a mandatory course required for all first-year and transfer students enrolled in the School of Business. Through this unique program, our students are provided with instruction on developing their strengths, working effectively in teams, preparing resumes and cover letters, business etiquette, and networking. Our FYDP mentors play a significant role in supporting our instructors in class and assisting with students' transition into GWSB.

For the 2012-2013 year, we are recruiting undergraduates for our standard FYDP sections and transfer student sections. Please review the guidelines carefully and submit by March 30, 2012!

GWSB Undergraduate Programs is partnering with the University Counseling Center to offer Academic Success Skill Workshops to be facilitated by Dr. Imran Riaz of the University Counseling Center.

HIMSS-NCA 2012 Scholarship Program

Through advocacy, education and professional development, the National Capital Area Chapter of the Health Information Management & Systems Society promotes the development and improvement of healthcare information management as an essential contribution to quality patient care.

Purpose: The HIMSS-NCA Scholarship program was established to provide financial assistance and recognition to students who are pursuing health information or systems management degrees, and are interested in helping to shape the future of the profession.

Objective: The program awards three scholarships – one for each of the following three degree programs: graduate, undergraduate and associate's level.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Active enrollment in a DC-Metro area accredited university fulfilling the requirements for a health information or systems management related degree
  • A grade point of 3.0 or better
  • Member of local HIMSS chapter

Application Requirements include:

  • Submission of the HIMSS-NCA Chapter Scholarship Application Form
  • Recent, official college transcripts, through the fall semester 2011
  • Three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a current school official
  • A short essay of no more than 500 words (2 pages) that addresses:
  • Why you have chosen this field? (1/2 page)
  • Why IM/IT is important to healthcare today? (1/2 page)
  • A discussion of a major issue facing the healthcare community today and how IM/IT can address the issue. (1 page)

Applications are available on the HIMSS-NCA web site at: www.himss-nca.org and must be submitted no later than April 17, 2012 to be considered for an award.
