GWSB Sophomore Living and Learning Community

The George Washington University School of Business (GWSB) and GW Housing Programs (GWHP) are proud to introduce a sophomore living and learning community for Fall 2011!

This community will be located in Guthridge Hall for the 2011-2012 academic year. By signing up for this living and learning community you will be guaranteed a residential space in Guthridge Hall. To sign up for this community please e-mail this form to ugradbus@gwu.edu. On this form you will submit your name, your GWID number, and the names of your desired roommates. The deadline to sign up for this program is January 31, 2011.

The goal of this community is to provide an environment in which students can achieve academic success through career exploration and community building activities as well as increased interaction with faculty, staff and students within a residential community. The GWSB Sophomore living and learning community will provide academic support and programs to complement the academic offerings and existing co-curricular programs within the School. Examples of specialized learning activities will include:

*Residence Hall study hours, including tutoring for classes such as Accountancy 2001/2002, Statistics 1051/1053 and writing support for BADM 2003W
*Monthly Chat & Chew discussions with GWSB Faculty and Alumni to provide in-depth information regarding the GWSB fields of concentration *Periodic interactions with the Dean of GWSB, Dr. Doug Guthrie and other key administrators and faculty
*Monthly peer networking events such as dodge ball tournaments, social dinners and sponsored outdoor activities such as the SUMMIT Ropes Course and hiking trips.

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Opportunities

The Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program allows students to work as a research assistant on a faculty members research project. Currently there are three opportunities available. Lessons for Leaders: The Value of Being Wrong

Join Kathryn Schulz, author of the book “Being Wrong: Adventures in the Margin of Error,” for a discussion on the merits of being wrong, admitting mistakes and how these lessons can apply in our personal and professional lives. Schulz will be joined by GW School of Business Dean Doug Guthrie; James Bailey, Ave Tucker Professor of Leadership and chair of the Department of Management; and Tjai M. Nielsen, dean’s research scholar and assistant professor of management.

The Business Response to Climate Change

"The StartUp Scramble™ DC University Challenge brings college students together for a weekend of rapid venture building. You will pitch, plan, and launch sustainable startups to improve society and work with some of the most amazing peers & social and business leaders across DC...all in 50+ hours.

WHAT?
Get on the grind with DC-area college entrepreneurs! The StartUp Scramble™ DC University Challenge brings entrepreneurial-minded students together in a weekend-long event to launch and fund sustainable ventures that address social issues affecting local communities.

Space is limited. There is a $25.00 buy-in fee that helps to cover food and event costs. All participants also receive an annaul subscription to GOOD Magazine. The StartUp Scramble™ DC University Challenge concludes with teams pitching their ventures to a panel of prestigious judges for cash prizes and other awards.

The weekend begins @ 5:30 PM on Friday and conlcudes Sunday evening after pitches.

The event will take place at the offices of Touchstone Consulting Group on 19th and N St. in Dupont Circle. Participants will also have the opportunity to work closely with sponsors and Touchstone consultants throughout the weekend as you build out your social ventures!

Simply complete and print the application and turn it in to the Advising Center in Duquès Hall, 456. The deadline to turn in the application form in February 1, 2011, but you can feel free to turn it in early.

The Andrew Stergiopoulos Foundation, in collaboration with the faculty and administration of George Washington University, is currently accepting application for the 2011 Andrew Stergiopoulos Scholarship Awards. Each year, the Awards are given to students in the sophomore and junior classes of the GW Undergraduate business school who exhibit Andrew’s outstanding qualities, including academic and athletic achievement, leadership and vision. Traditionally, two Awards are given each year, and each Award takes the form of a cash gift in the amount of $2500. To be used to defray tuition or work-study expenses, for a special research project, or to fund study abroad.

Winners of the Award are selected based on a short application, an essay and a faculty recommendation. Please visit our web site at www.Sterg.org for further information. For the 2011 Awards, application materials must be received by the Foundation not later than February 15, 2011. Recipients of the Award will be invited to attend a luncheon or dinner celebrating Fellowship Scholarships at The George Washington University.
