In Fixed Income, all Summer Analysts spend their 10-12 week internship with the Financial Analytics and Structured Transactions (F.A.S.T.) Department - a center of expertise for the creation and analysis of fixed income and derivative securities worldwide. The group uses innovative techniques that employ state-of-the-art analytics and technology to help the firm and its clients meet individual business objectives. The department is dedicated to excellence in a wide variety of services, including:
Summer Analysts are exposed to the daily flow of business through their desk placements and are asked to assist in day-to-day work while shadowing opportunities and project-work are made available. Summer desk placements within F.A.S.T. may be in one of the following areas: Reverse Engineering, Pricing Direct, Portfolio Strategies, Technology or Research. Each Summer Analyst is assigned a mentor and encouraged to interact with employees of all levels throughout Fixed Income and the firm. A myriad of presentations and lunches are scheduled to provide overviews of the various products and businesses relevant to Fixed Income and other areas of Bear Stearns. In addition, F.A.S.T. Training Sessions are scheduled focusing on bond math, analytics and the use of in-house systems. Fixed Income Summer Analysts are provided with mandatory and recommended readings in addition to personal log-ins to e-learning coursework through the New York Institute of Finance. Numerous social and community-related events take place during the course of the summer as well.
QUALIFICATIONS
The pace in Fixed Income requires quick and informed thinking, the ability to withstand the rigors of working extended hours and the individual’s desire to work in a demanding environment. We look for highly motivated, self-confident individuals who have demonstrated flexibility and variety in their backgrounds. We search for candidates with outstanding academic records, involvement in extracurricular activities or outside employment, the ability to work well with others, strong oral and written communication skills, attention to detail and a concern for accuracy. No specific academic major is a prerequisite, however, a candidate must be comfortable with financial and mathematical concepts and have basic computing skills (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.). Candidates interested in this program should possess exceptional analytical and quantitative skills as well.
The Summer Analyst Program is a primary source for hiring full-time analysts. Juniors in college who are interested in our full-time Fixed Income Analyst Program are strongly encouraged to apply for a summer internship.
