Bio and Research:

Sanjay Patnaik is an assistant professor in the Department of Strategic Management and Public Policy. He previously was a visiting lecturer and senior fellow in the Management Department at the Wharton School, Univ. of Pennsylvania. Sanjay earned his Doctorate in Business Administration (Strategy) from Harvard Business School in 2012 and he serves on the advisory board for the Initiative for Environmental Leadership (IGEL) at the Wharton School. Sanjay's main research and teaching interests include among others non-market strategy, global strategy, environmental regulation and political economy.

Sanjay's current research agenda is aimed at improving our understanding of how firms capture value by engaging with their broader business environment (e.g. government regulators, politicians, NGOs etc.). His main research efforts are focused on the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS), the largest active cap-and-trade program for greenhouse gases in the world. He specifically studies the interaction of firms and regulators within the EU ETS and examines the importance of institutional characteristics in the implementation of this multinational regulatory program. In a different research stream, Sanjay is also exploring the effects of political and regulatory obstacles on foreign direct investment.

His teaching experience includes the MBA course "Corporate Diplomacy" and the undergraduate class "The Political and Social Environment of the Multinational Firm" at the Wharton School, Univ. of Pennsylvania (2012). Sanjay also taught his own class "The Economics of International Business and Globalization" at the Harvard University Department of Economics in 2010. For teaching this class, he was awarded the "Harvard University Certificate of Distinction in Teaching" by the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning. Sanjay also gained experience in executive education at Harvard Business School, where he taught teams of managers in the Executive Education Program "Leading Change and Organizational Renewal" from 2009 to 2011.

Prior to the completion of his doctoral studies at Harvard Business School (2007-2012), Sanjay worked in investment banking in Germany and academia in Austria. He holds a Master's degree in Economics and Computer Science and a Master's degree in Business Engineering and Computer Science, both from the Vienna University of Technology in Austria. During his studies he spent time abroad at universities in Spain and the United States. In his spare time Sanjay enjoys traveling, reading and ballroom dancing. He speaks German, English, Spanish and French.
