MBA Program Admissions

The George Washington University School of Business (GWSB) holds applicants to all of our MBA programs to the same competitive admissions standards. The admissions committee bases decisions on an applicant’s academic preparation and performance, work experience, and strength of recommendations, essays, and interviews. The GRE or GMAT test is not required — however, if you feel that submitting your scores will strengthen your application, you are welcome to submit them.

Admission Process

Applying to business school may seem overwhelming, but the GWSB admissions team is here to help. As you complete your MBA application, our admissions staff is ready to provide you with the support you may need. While we cannot provide evaluative feedback during the application process, please don’t hesitate to contact our office with questions about completing your application.

The MBA application process for all MBA degree formats can be described in three steps:

1. Learn About Graduate Admissions at GWSB

Familiarize yourself with our general graduate admissions application process.

2. Begin Your Application

Review the application requirements checklist, then begin your online application and submit all supporting application materials. You may make changes and edits to your application at any time prior to submission. Once submitted, your application will be reviewed only after the admissions office has received all supporting application materials.

Additional MBA Application Information & Requirements

Below are additional requirements and waiver opportunities for our MBA program.

Admissions Essay

In no more than 500 words, tell us why studying at the GW School of Business (GWSB) is the program best suited for you and your academic interests, and explain how you will leverage both your past professional career and future academic experience at GW to achieve your post-MBA aspirations.

GMAT or GRE Scores

A GMAT/GRE score report is not required as part of the application process for all MBA programs at GW. However, if you feel that submitting your scores will strengthen your application, you are welcome to submit them.

Should you choose not to submit a GMAT or GRE Score, we ask that you utilize your Statement of Purpose to highlight evidence supporting your academic preparedness. Also, include any quantitative experience in your professional and academic history that you believe has equipped you to succeed academically in the program.

Quantitative Aptitude

Candidates without previous undergraduate or graduate quantitative course work, strong quantitative skills displayed on the GMAT or GRE test, or quantitative centered professional experience, may be asked to demonstrate their abilities by taking a class (such as calculus) at an accredited institution prior to beginning MBA coursework.

3. Attend an Interview

The School of Business conducts interviews by invitation for GMBA programs. Interviews are granted on an invitation-only basis. The Admission Committee may contact you to schedule an interview, after we have completed a preliminary evaluation of your submitted application. The Admission Committee interviews a significant number of applicants and may decide, at any point during a round, to invite candidates to interview.

The interview is an important evaluative component of the application process and is conducted by a member of the Admission Committee. Typically, interviews are 30-40 minutes in length.

Decisions

Decisions are posted on a rolling basis, and individuals are encouraged to apply early for consideration.

Re-Application Information

For those who have a strong interest in our MBA programs, we readily encourage you to re-apply to GWSB, regardless of past admission decisions. You may submit one application per program entry term.

Our most successful re-applicants include those who have made significant improvements to test scores, advanced within their careers, or displayed marked improvement in areas of leadership and community involvement.

Admission FAQ

As a prospective MBA student at the George Washington University School of Business, you are sure to have questions regarding our programs and application processes. Please find some of the most frequently asked questions below.

Application Process

Where do I start?

All applicants must complete our online application and follow our admissions process. We encourage you to begin an application to get started.

Can I apply to both the full-time and part-time programs?

Since we want you to identify the program that will best suit your academic and career goals, you need not submit more than one application but are allowed to do so if you feel strongly. We encourage you to join us for one of our many on-campus and online information sessions to explore our programmatic options prior to applying.

If at any point in the application process, you would like to change the program to which you have applied, please email the admissions team at [email protected].

Do I need to submit official transcripts?

We know that the admission process can be costly and intensive, which is why we encourage you to upload unofficial transcripts with your online application for the initial review of your application. Frequently, these can be downloaded from your undergraduate institution’s website.

Should you be accepted and choose to matriculate at GW, you then will be required to have official copies of all transcripts sent to the School of Business. Please note that registration for classes will not be allowed until all official documentation has been received.

Do you offer application fee waivers?

As we look to diversify our class, certain applicants to the program may have their application fee waived. Additionally, we regularly offer application fee waivers to those who attend our Info Sessions, so we strongly recommend that you attend one of these events prior to applying.

Should I visit campus?

We strongly encourage you to visit campus, speak with our representatives when we’re in your city, or attend an online information session prior to submitting an application. Most of our strongest applicants have taken advantage of these opportunities to receive in-depth background not available via our website. You can then use what you’ve learned from these interactions to enhance your application prior to submission.

Will you evaluate my profile and let me know if I'm a strong candidate?

Due to the large volume of applications that we receive, we are not able to provide prospective students with evaluative feedback. However, you are encouraged to visit our website and view the class profile of our most recent entering class. The class profile will help you gauge where your credentials stand when compared to the rest of our class. Additionally, we look at all applications holistically, which means we’re not solely focused on standardized test scores or your undergraduate record. With your application, we look for ways that you’ll enhance the classroom experience via your personal and professional background. If you feel that you can present a strong overall application, then we encourage you to apply.

Do you have a waitlist?

Yes. With each round of admission, the admission committee will decide to admit, deny, or waitlist each candidate that has submitted a complete application. If you have been added to the waitlist, the admission committee has identified potential and something of interest in you as a candidate for the program that you’ve applied to. You may choose to accept or decline your position on the waiting list at any time.

If you have been offered a position on the waiting list, we encourage you to send any updated information that will enhance your initial application, which may include new test scores, additional quantitative coursework that has been recently completed, or an updated resume reflecting career advancement or a change in position.

As part of the waitlist, you will automatically be reconsidered with each subsequent round of applicants until decisions are finalized prior to the start of the entry term.

If I'm accepted, can I defer my admission offer?

For our Global MBA students, we only offer admission deferrals under very rare circumstances. These generally involve military/veteran deployment or visa denials for international candidates. Professional opportunities that arise prior to the start of classes will not be considered for deferral, however we do offer a simple reapplication process for candidates in this situation. Accepted students who choose not to attend in the year to which they have been admitted will need to reapply via a reapplication process.

For our Professional MBA students, we offer the option to postpone your start of classes for up to one semester, i.e. you have applied for an August entry and now want to begin in January. Please note that you will be asked to submit your enrollment deposit by your initial deposit deadline and then contact us to revise the start date of your program. If you do not begin by the revised start date, you will need to reapply via the reapplication process.

Where do I send my official application components (i.e. official transcripts, standardized test scores)?

When possible, all unofficial documents should be uploaded as part of the online application. If admitted into the program, or if your university does not offer an official electronic transcript service, candidates should mail official transcripts to:

George Washington University
ATTN: School of Business, Graduate Admissions
2025 F St NW L-101
Washington, D.C. 20052

Official standardized test scores need to be submitted electronically via the testing service using the following codes:

  • GRE code: 5246
  • GMAT codes:
    • Global MBA: QK4-4F-40
    • Professional MBA – Self-Paced: QK4-4F-28
    • Professional MBA – Cohort: QK4-4F-21
    • Online MBA: QK4-4F-03
  • TOEFL code: 5246

Admission Requirements

Can I waive the GMAT/GRE requirements?

A GMAT/GRE score report is not required as part of the application process for all MBA programs at GW. However, if you feel that submitting your scores will strengthen your application, you are welcome to submit them.

Should you choose not to submit a GMAT or GRE Score, we ask that you utilize your Statement of Purpose to highlight evidence supporting your academic preparedness. Also, include any quantitative experience in your professional and academic history that you believe has equipped you to succeed academically in the program.

Is there a minimum GPA requirement?

No. There is no minimum GPA requirement in order to be considered for admission. To see GPA ranges and average GPAs for each program, please consult our class profiles.

Is work experience required for any of your MBA programs?

With few exceptions, accepted students generally have at least two years of full-time, post-undergraduate professional experience at the time of entry to the program. However, GW does not have a minimum work experience requirement for admission.

The Admissions Committee takes internships and cooperative education assignments into account, but those experiences are usually considered supplementary. Military experience and non-traditional backgrounds will strongly be considered when evaluating applications. To see the average years of work experience and work experience ranges for our current classes, please visit the class profile page.

Do I need to interview?

All of our MBA programs require interviews to gain admission. Interviews are by invitation only.

Upon receiving your application, a member of the admission committee will complete an initial review to determine if a candidate will be invited to interview. We do not offer informational interviews, but strongly encourage you to attend one of our on-campus or online Info Sessions instead.

MBA Programs and Transfer Credit

How long does it take to complete the Global MBA program?

Our Global MBA students complete 53 credits over the course of four semesters (21 months) beginning in August of each year. The 21-month time frame provides enough time to complete a strongly recommended internship in the summer between the two years of study.

How many credits are required in the Part-Time Flex MBA program?

Our Part-Time Flex MBA, Accelerated MBA, Online MBA, and Online Healthcare MBA are all 46.5-credit programs. Students take a total of 31.5 credits of required coursework, three credits of analytics/technology-focused selectives, and 12 credits of general electives.

Does GW offer online courses?

Yes, we offer our Part-Time Flex MBA degree in a fully online format — our Online MBA. Online courses are also open to our on-campus Part-Time Flex MBA students, allowing them to complete a hybrid program. All core courses and select electives are available online. Please consult with your advisor about online options.

Can I take elective courses at other GW schools, i.e. the Elliott School of International Affairs?

For the elective courses in your program, you may choose from our 6000-level electives from any department within the School of Business. Additionally, you may take up to twelve graduate level credit hours outside of the School of Business after matriculating into the MBA program (if transfer courses from another institution are not being applied to your elective requirements).

What career services are provided to MBA students?

The F. David Fowler Career Center is staffed by exceptional professionals who provide the following services: personal career coaching, job opportunities including on campus recruiting, job search strategies workshops, resume development and interviewing skills. You can make individual advising appointments, including evening and online, with at least a day’s notice by calling 202-994-6704 or sending an email to [email protected]. Visit the Career Center for additional information and services.

What are my options if I would like to study abroad?

There are a myriad of opportunities for international education at GWSB. The Global & Experiential Education office supports global business education through a broad portfolio of short-term and long-term global study programs, experiential education courses, and international student services. Global opportunities are available for Global MBA, Part-Time Flex MBA, and Online MBA students.

Can I take courses at other universities within the D.C. metro area, or at other schools?

Students may petition to take courses from other AACSB-accredited universities and through the Consortium Program. The George Washington University is a member of the Consortium of Universities of the Metropolitan Washington Area, which includes American University, Catholic University of America, Gallaudet University, George Mason University, The George Washington University, Georgetown University, Howard University, Marymount University, the University of the District of Columbia, and the University of Maryland. GW MBA students may take courses at any Consortium member institution with the approval of the academic advisor and program director. Students must be in good academic standing and may enroll in up to six hours of approved courses through the Consortium. If the same course is offered on the GW campus during the same semester, approval will not be granted. Students register and pay tuition at GW for all Consortium courses, but course fees are paid to the visiting institution. Students may not take on-line courses through the Consortium. Procedures for Consortium registration are detailed on the registrar’s website.

I'm attending another school and would like to transfer to GWU. What are the guidelines concerning transfer students?

To transfer, you will need to go through the regular application process. You may transfer up to six graduate-level credits into our program from outside AACSB-accredited universities. For more information, please view the Transfer of Credit policy in the GWSB Academic Policy Handbook.

What if I need to take a semester off?

A student who must interrupt active pursuit of the MBA degree for a semester or more may petition the program director for a leave of absence for up to two full semesters. A student who discontinues active enrollment in the academic program without being granted a leave of absence must apply for readmission and will be subject to the new regulations and requirements in force. The five-year limit to complete the MBA program is extended by the number of semesters of official personal leave taken.

Where can I find the list of books need for class?

The GW Bookstore should be your first place to look for required course materials. You can follow the link below and enter your course information to see the required materials listed. If the books are not listed there, you can contact your professor and ask if this information is available.

You can visit the GW Bookstore to purchase many if not all of the books on your booklist.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

How much does the program cost?

Global MBA students currently have a fixed tuition rate of $113,090.00 for the 53-credit program. Tuition is divided evenly into four installments due at the beginning of each semester.

Part-Time Flex MBA students complete a 46.5 credit hour program and are charged per credit hour. The MBA tuition rate by credit hour for the 2020-2021 academic year is $2,215 per credit hour.

What if I have questions regarding financial aid?

Information on financial aid and federal loans is handled by the GW Office of Student Financial Assistance. Representatives are available by phone at 202-994-9000 or by email at [email protected]. If you prefer to meet with someone in person, counselors are available on the ground floor of the University Student Center during walk-in hours.

Are there any additional steps to be considered for scholarships?

For all of our MBA programs, all applicants are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships and no separate application is required. Scholarship decisions are announced at the time of admission and only new, incoming students are eligible for scholarships through the admissions office.

Fellowships and Financial Support

While the benefits of the student experience at GW are immeasurable, we understand that pursuing a graduate degree is a significant financial investment that requires careful planning. The GW School of Business, along with our individual, alumni, corporate, and foundation donors and partners, offers a variety of merit-based fellowship programs that can help fund your education.

All prospective students who opt in to be considered for fellowship consideration in the online application are automatically considered for the GW Merit fellowship. Unless otherwise stated, no separate application is required.

In limited circumstances, current students may be eligible for certain fellowships. If funds are available to current students for the following academic year, a call for applications will be sent during the spring semester.

Below are examples of tuition fellowship opportunities offered by the GW School of Business.

GWSB Fellowships

Prospective students who opt in for fellowship consideration in the online application are automatically considered for all merit-based tuition awards offered by the School of Business. Admissions committees evaluate individual applications and make award decisions based on factors such as academic performance, standardized test scores, professional experience, and an evaluative interview. Funding is awarded to students at the time of admission based on the strength of the student’s application.

Endowments

In addition to GW School of Business fellowships, prospective students electing to be considered for fellowship consideration in the online application are automatically considered for fellowships funded by GW’s various endowments. These endowments, administered by the Office of Graduate Student Assistantships and Fellowships (OGSAF), are valid for one academic year and cannot be used for summer semesters. Although eligibility criteria and conditions for individual endowments vary, no separate application is required for prospective students.

Examples of endowed fellowships awarded to School of Business students in recent years include:

  • Oliver T. Carr, Jr. Scholarship for GWSB graduate students interested in real estate
  • Daewoo Endowment for graduate students who are citizens of Vietnam or China
  • Julius Fleishchman Scholarship for graduate students interest in real estate or tourism and hospitality management
  • Philip P. Friedlander, Jr. Scholarship for GWSB students with concentrations in entrepreneurship and small business studies
  • Hyundai Endowment for graduate students who are citizens of South Korea or the United States, interested in US-Korean relations, and enrolled in the programs related to information systems management, procurement and contracting, international business, accounting, or hospitality management
  • Marvin L. Kay Fellowship for graduate students interested in finance
  • Rita H. Keller Scholarship Fund for graduate students interest in international business
  • Poncelet Scholarship Endowment for Belgian and EU citizens interested in accountancy, finance, information systems, international business, logistics and material management, marketing, or science, technology, and innovation.
Gifts

The GW School of Business is able to provide additional funding opportunities to qualified students through gifts from various organizations. The following awards are made possible through the generosity of our supporters:

  • Fellowship for students in the MS in Business Analytics program
  • Project Management Institute Fellowship for students in the MS in Project Management program
MBA Students

The GW School of Business offers additional funding opportunities to MBA students, including:

  • Carruthers Family MBA Scholarship for Global MBA candidates
  • Goodwin Foundation Endowment for all MBA candidates
  • Rita Keller Endowment for MBA candidates with a concentration in international business
  • Washington Gas Light Endowment for all MBA candidates

The GW School of Business also partners with various foundations and corporations to provide additional funding resources for MBA candidates. Fellowship eligibility criteria, benefits, and application requirements vary based on individual partnerships.

Current Students

For Current Fellowship Recipients

Tuition fellowships are typically offered at the time of admission, and award letters state the award terms and the enrollment and GPA requirements to maintain eligibility. Additionally, students must abide by the conditions detailed in the Graduate Award Requirements document. If a student receiving a GW fellowship fails to meet the stated conditions, the award will be rescinded.

If the award package extends beyond the academic year for which a student is admitted into their GWSB graduate program, the student will receive a renewal award letter during the spring semester for the following academic year.

Though extremely rare, there may be special situations in which the GW School of Business may grant exceptions to certain award requirements or make adjustments to award terms. To make such a request, submit the Policy Exception Request Form. All requests will be reviewed by GWSB Graduate Programs and, if necessary, the Dean’s Office. Additional information may be requested. After a decision is made, there is no appeal process.

New Fellowship Opportunities

Current students may be eligible for certain fellowships administered by the Office of Graduate Student Assistantships and Fellowships (OGSAF). If funds are available to current students for the following academic year, a call for applications will be sent during the spring semester.

Eligibility, benefits, and application requirements vary depending on the specific fellowship, and some funds are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Therefore, interested students are encouraged to browse the OGSAF website and apply early. The OGSAF website also contains information about external funding opportunities.
