Master of Science in Information Systems Technology (MSIST)

Admissions Qualifications:

Admissions to the Master of Science in Information Systems Technology program is competitive. Applicants must present a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university and meet the minimum entrance requirements of the School of Business. The review process considers each of the following areas on its own merit and candidates should show significant achievement in each area to be considered a strong prospect for admission.

  • The ability to excel academically in an environment that will demand strong technical, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Evidence of maturity to integrate educational opportunities into personal and professional goals.
  • Management and leadership potential and strong communication skills.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and are considered for Fall, Spring and Summer admissions. We strongly encourage you to submit your completed application as early as possible for the strongest consideration.

Admissions Requirements:

To be considered complete, your application must include the following:

  • Complete Graduate Admissions Application. All applications must be completed on-line.
  • Payment of a non-refundable application fee to GWU. The fee will be waived for applicants who already possess an undergraduate or graduate degree from GW. The online application accepts electronic payment. However, you may still submit a check to the admissions office.
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Transcripts will not be considered official unless they arrive in a sealed envelope.
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • A current resume.
  • Statement of Purpose.

Applicants who do not possess exemplary undergraduate backgrounds in a related field of study may be required to submit official results of the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) sent to report code 5246. To expedite processing, you should submit an application that is otherwise complete and forward the test scores when they become available.

Applications are accepted for the Fall (September), Spring (January) and Summer (May) semesters on a rolling basis at both locations (Main Campus, and Virginia Science and Technology Campus).

International Admissions Requirements

International students must also submit the following:

  • Official results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) taken within the last two years. TOEFL scores are required of all applicants who do not hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in an English-speaking country such as the United States, Canada, UK, or Australia. A minimum TOEFL score of 100 on the internet-based exam, 250 on the computer exam, or 600 on the paper exam is required for admission to the program. Please use the institution code 5246 and department code 02 to have your TOEFL scores sent to the School of Business.
  • Financial Certification form along with supporting documentation indicating that you have adequate funding for tuition and living expenses for the duration of the MS-IST program.
  • Copies of all current or recently issued visa or I-20 documentation. (To expedite processing, you should submit an application that is otherwise complete and forward the copies of visa or I-20 documentation when they become available).
Transfer Credits

A maximum of 6 credit hours of graduate course work may be approved for transfer to the School of Business from enrollment at GW in non-degree status or from another degree-granting school of this University, or another regionally accredited college or university under the following conditions: The course work must be approved as part of the student’s program of studies; it must not have been applied to the completion of requirements for another degree, it must be at the graduate level, it must have been taken within the two years prior to acceptance into the program, and the student must have received a grade of B or better. (That includes any IST course taken for a grade at GW as a non-degree student.) It is strongly recommended that students be formally admitted into the School of Business before beginning course work.

Executive MSIST

Admission for the Executive MSIST program is highly competitive and limited to 30 participants per cohort. Applications are considered only for the Fall semester. Applicants must present a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university and meet the minimum entrance requirements of the School of Business.

Candidates wishing to determine if the Executive MSIST program is a good fit prior to submitting an application should send a resume to emis@gwu.edu, or call our office at 703.726.8330. You will receive counseling and more information regarding the Executive MSIST program. Since the Executive MSIST program has limited admissions opportunities, all Executive MSIST candidates are encouraged to complete the application as early as possible, preferably before June 1st. The application process includes the following components:

GW Graduate Admission Application. Applicants complete the online application and provide a statement of purpose, resume, application fee, official transcripts for all prior undergraduate and graduate coursework and three letters of recommendation. International students are required to submit an official education evaluation and TOEFL scores. Candidates are notified of the admissions decision and have two weeks to submit a non-refundable deposit of $500 to reserve their position in the cohort. Personal Interview. The interview is your opportunity to expand upon your professional and academic experiences and to discuss your goals with a faculty member. This is also an excellent opportunity to ask questions about the program and to ensure that the program is well suited to your needs. Once your application is submitted, you will be contacted to schedule an interview. Interviews are frequently held on class days to give the candidate a better understanding of the dynamics of the Executive MSIST day.
