Message From the Dean — October 2023

October 3, 2023

Dear GW Business Community,

The semester continues to be energizing! It was great to welcome our Board of Advisors for the fall meeting last week. It was also fun welcoming our first-year and new transfer students during Convocation at the Smith Center. Yet another highlight I enjoyed this month was meeting our alumni and parents who were in town for the annual GW Alumni & Families Weekend events. Thank you to Professor N. Sharon Hill for delivering the “Best of GW” lecture during our Dean’s Open House event and sharing expertise on the “Strategies for Effective Virtual Communication in the Digital Age.” Please also join me in congratulating our Board of Advisors member Christine Brown-Quinn, M.B.A. '92, who was recognized with the Spirit of GW Award for Outstanding Service for her many contributions and generosity to the GW community.

In addition, it was fantastic to see our outstanding alumni and employer partners join many of our students during Career Week hosted by the F. David Fowler Career Center. Our students and alumni were also together and delighted to meet President Ellen Granberg at the inaugural GW Ramsey Scholars Investment Summit organized by the GW Investment Institute. Norma and W. Russell Ramsey, B.B.A. ’81, HON '14, have generously supported countless students with opportunities to gain valuable, hands-on experience with investing and portfolio management.

This semester has brought great news for our school. We were recognized in national rankings once again, as fifth in International Business, number 38 for Undergraduate Business, and top 50 in Finance in the U.S. News & World Report “Best Colleges” ranking for 2024. We were recognized in another recent ranking, as third on Bloomberg Businessweek ’s Diversity Index ranking of full-time M.B.A. programs and as number 46 on its 2023-24 list of the “Best Business Schools” around the globe. I appreciate our collective efforts to elevate our mission and be changemakers, business and policy thought leaders, and champions of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

In the coming weeks, I invite all faculty, staff, students, and alumni to attend our George Talks Business series. This season is shaping up to be one of our most attended. Last week, we hosted Robin Hayes, CEO of JetBlue Airways Corp. Our next session will be on October 24, welcoming panelists William Chappell, Ph.D., vice president and chief technology officer for the strategic missions and technologies division at Microsoft, and Nitin Natarajan, deputy director for the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). Please stay tuned for the registration to go live soon and for more updates about other exciting events this fall!

Stay safe and stay well everyone,
