How to Apply

Exchange Students spend one fall semester (September-December) or spring semester (January-May) as non-degree students at the GWSB. Although exchange students do not earn a Masters degree from GW, they enroll in regular graduate-level classes.

If you are a student from one of our partner universities interested in an exchange with GWSB, please contact the Exchange Coordinator at your home university. Once you have been nominated by your home university, GWSB will contact you regarding how to apply.

English Language Requirements

International applicants from countries in which English is not the official language are required to take the TOEFL or IELTS exam. The TOEIC test is not accepted. See below for the minimum scores for admission to the GWSB:

Obtaining a Visa

Upon acceptance as an international exchange student, GW will provide the appropriate papers for students to apply for a student visa at their local U.S. Embassy or Consulate. The visa application process can be time-consuming. It is essential that students send complete materials at the time of application in order to not delay the visa. Please allow ample time for visa processing by the U.S. Embassy in your home country. For information on travel to Washington, DC, please visit the GW International Services Office.

International Services Office

The International Services Office (ISO) at GW facilitates international educational exchange through its services and programs. It serves as the primary administrative, programming, and advising office for the GW international community, and in particular, international students. See the information below about the orientation and advising, but also explore the ISO website for more information about their office.

  • Orientation:Exchange students attend a three-day orientation when they first arrive in Washington, D.C. The orientation is facilitated by the ISO and tailored to address legal issues and cultural adjustment. Excursions around DC are also organized during the orientation. The School of Business will organize a separate, short orientation during the ISO orientation.
  • Advising: Questions regarding your immigration status should be directed to the International Services Office. Please visit the ISO website for advising hours.

Academic Calendar

The School of Business has two main semesters (fall and  spring), with the majority of classes meeting in the evenings. The fall semester runs from early September to mid-December. The spring semester runs from mid-January to mid-May.  See the Academic Calendar for more specific dates and holidays.

Courses & Curricula

The GWSB offers a wide variety of graduate-level business courses through its MBA and Specialized Master’s Degree programs. Exchange students are also eligible to take most courses numbered 200 and above in any school or department throughout The George Washington University, except those in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the Law School, and certain courses that are restricted to students seeking specific degrees or who have specific prerequisites.

There are several ways you can explore the courses and curricula available to you:

Schedule of Classes – Explore the lists of courses offered each semester at The George Washington University. An advantage of being an exchange student at GW is that you can take courses outside of the GW School of Business that your home institution may not offer because of its specialization in business only.

  • Step 1: Click Schedule of Classes.
  • Step 2: Find the box that lists the semester you intend to study at GW (for example, “Fall 2010”).
  • Step 3: Within your chosen semester, select the “Main Campus” link.
  • Step 4: Click on the field of study to see the list of classes offered that semester (for example: “Business Administration”, “Finance”, or “Decision Sciences”).
  • Step 5: Note specific classes of interest to you. Click on their links to get course descriptions, and view the listing to see their Course Registration Number (CRN), dates and times they are offered, buildings where they will take place, as well as other valuable information.

GWSB Graduate-Level Programs – Click on the links to the graduate-level business programs below to learn more about individual program course offerings.  Although you would not earn a degree from GW by taking classes in these programs for one semester, you are still able to explore the classes offered in each program and select which courses interest you with certain exceptions.

Location

One of the GWSB’s greatest advantages is its location in downtown Washington, D.C. The School of Business is located on GW’s Foggy Bottom campus in Duquès Hall and Funger Hall at 2201 G Street NW, Suite 550, Washington, D.C. 20052. Within blocks of campus are The White House, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund, as well as the headquarters and offices of thousands of national and multinational corporations, nonprofits, and nongovernmental organizations. At GWSB, you’ll truly be at the center of it all.

Housing

Exchange students must make their own housing arrangements. See GW Off Campus Housing for more information. Off-campus options include the International Student House, a private dormitory within walking distance to the School of Business. Many students prefer to live at the International Student House because of its location, cost, and other programming available.  For additional information about finding housing and about the neighborhoods of D.C. please download the MBAA Housing Guide created by students in the MBA Association.

Career Development

The F. David Fowler School of Business Career Center provides career advising services to all GWSB students. This full-service center helps students with resumes, interviews, and other advising services for preferred careers. The staff maintains relationships with employers and arranges career fairs and networking sessions among employers, students, and alumni. In addition, the office coordinates a series of panels to introduce students to careers in a variety of fields. Because of restrictions on foreign nationals working in the United States, international students are encouraged to first talk with the GW International Services Office about the employment guidelines for their particular student visa.
