Van Order has taught at Purdue University, the University of Southern California, Queen’s University (Canada), American University, the University of California, Los Angeles, Ohio State University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Michigan and the University of Aberdeen (Scotland). He was also a visiting professor of finance and real estate at GWSB. Van Order was an economist at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), serving as director of the Housing Finance Analysis Division, and he was chief economist at Freddie Mac.

Van Order has been a consultant to USAID, HUD, the World Bank and other corporations, agencies and organizations, both public and private. A member of the American Economic Association and the American Real Estate & Economics Association, he sits on the editorial boards of several prestigious journals. His work on economics, housing and real estate – both academic and general – has been widely published.
