Altug was both a research and teaching assistant at the University of Florida and Columbia University. Before starting his PhD, he worked for five years for i2 Technologies, Inc., an Irving, Texas-based provider of supply-chain management solutions. As a solution architect, project leader and consultant, Altug worked on many large-scale supply chain projects at various high-profile companies all around the world.

A member of the Institute for Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS) and the Institute of Industrial Engineers, Altug has presented at many conferences, including the INFORMS Annual Conferences in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 and the Manufacturing and Service Operations Management (MSOM) conferences in 2006 and 2009.
