 Exploring Your Options

7Exploring Your Options is the first step in developing a successful and fulfilling career. Begin with Self-Assessment by engaging in self-discovery activities to determine your interests, motivators, and skills as they relate to your future career. Next, conduct Research to determine which industries, positions, and companies align with these factors, as well as what opportunities are available to gain experience and connect with professionals in such roles.

Use the “Exploring Your Options Action Plan” as a guide!

Self-Assessment

The foundation of your job search is self-assessment and self-discovery. Thoughtful consideration of your skills, interests, and motivators will help you focus on organizations and careers that are compatible with your goals, and will allow you to market yourself effectively.

Career Coaching

FDFCC’s undergraduate career coaches are available to help you identify career paths that fit well with your interests and skills. During coaching appointments, students can speak with a career coach about choosing a concentration, researching industries of interest, exploring potential career paths, and any other topics related to career development. To set up an appointment, select “Request an Appointment” from your GWorkSB homepage

Research

Research is an essential step in both career exploration and the job search. Employers state that the most competitive candidates for jobs and internships are those who have thoroughly researched the industry, company, and position. The more knowledge you gain about your target industries, companies, and positions, the more you will stand out as an informed candidate.
