Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is the 1+1 Mentor Program?
A: A School of Business funded program which matches interested new MBA students with mentors who serve as role models, advisors, guides, and friends. The primary function is to help a new GWSB MBA student have a successful transition to graduate school as well as to achieve their goals.

Q2: What is the goal of the 1+1 Mentor Program?
A: The goal of the program is to enhance the educational experience of graduate students through the vast wisdom, talents, and networks of the GW School of Business alumni, friends of alumni, and the business community.

Q3: Who can be a mentor?
A: Mentors are GWSB alumni, friends of alumni, or business leaders in the DC community and have the desire to help new GWSB MBA students get adjusted to graduate student life on our campus and achieve career goals.

Q4: What is the format of the program?
A: The Mentoring Program is structured to serve the new graduate student populations - Global, Accelerated, Professional, World Executive, Healthcare, and Executive MBAs - at GW. First year MBA students who complete the Mentee Application are matched with mentors. Mentors can choose to be matched with 1 or 2 mentees.

Q5: When does recruitment begin for mentees and mentors?
A: Typically, the MBA Programs office will start recruitment of mentees for the program via email or newsletter in August/September. The GWSB Alumni Relations office starts recruitment of mentors earlier - during the summer or in August.

Q6: What do I get out of being a mentor?
A: By assisting a new student to explore their goals and future aspirations and by expressing concern about a new student's well-being, you become a valuable part of the GWSB community. You create a direct connection for students outside of the classroom to the GWSB campus. Students who have positive experiences with their mentor will be more likely to make contributions of time and resources as alumni.

Q7: How do I join the program as a student?
A: The best time to sign up for the program is after the start of your first fall semester in August. You can access the application from this website during this time. Applications will be due in late September/October. However, after October, the application will be available in electronic or paper copy through the MBA Programs office. All you need to do is fill out the application in its entirety, and the MBA Programs office will contact you when matches have been completed. You may contact the MBA Programs office if you have any questions about the mentor program and the application.

Q8: How do I join the program as a mentor?
A: You may sign up for the program anytime during the academic year, but the best time is during the beginning of the academic year in August. You can access the application from this website during the time. Applications are due in late September/October. However, after October, the application will be available in electronic or hard copy through the Alumni Relations office. You may contact the Alumni Relations office if you have any questions about the mentor program and the application.

Q9: How will I be paired with my mentor?
A: You tell us about yourself so that we can appropriately match you. We make matches based on business area interest, location, career goals, etc. The application is extensive and it is encouraged you complete it entirely to ensure the best match. The MBA Programs office matches pairings by hand.

Q10: Can I sign up at anytime during the year?
A: The most effective mentoring relationships begin near the start of the first year, so it is encouraged you sign up when recruitment begins in August. Applications will be due in late September/October. Matches will be sent out in late October; after this time, the application will only be available in hard or electronic copy; and matches will be made on a rolling basis. After October, we are not able to pair everyone immediately as it depends on the number of mentors who apply to the program. You will be notified if you have been matched with a mentee/mentor.

Q11: When will I know who my mentor is?
A: If you sign up at the start of the academic year in September and you are successfully matched, you will receive information via email about your mentor in October.
After October, a match is not guaranteed depending on the number of mentors who sign up, but you may be notified at any time throughout the school year when a match has been made.

Q12: When will I know who my mentee is?
A: If you sign up at the start of the academic year in September and you are successfully matched, you will receive information via email about your mentee in October.
