Expert Career Panels and Speakers Help the F. David Fowler Career Center Meet the Needs of GWSB Students

The F. David Fowler Career Center (FDFCC) is proud to wrap up an eventful October full of panelists and speakers who graciously provided valuable career information to GWSB students. Gil Yancey, executive director of the FDFCC stated, "We will continue to bring high profile guests to address our students because it enhances their awareness and preparedness and helps them stand out in this turbulent job market."

The career panels focused on finance, consulting, and international business. The panelists who participated included professionals from Fortune 500 companies, boutiques, and government agencies. Many of the panelists were GWSB Alumni who were excited for the opportunity to participate and be involved with the program. Sarah Guroff, MBA '09, an operations director for Chemonics International enjoyed meeting the students. She remarked that, "The event was a great opportunity to not only meet and guide current students, but to also identify potential recruits for our organization." In an effort to involve faculty members in their students' career development, professors of finance, management, international business, and public policy moderated the panels.

In addition to the panelists, three distinguished speakers shared their insights with the students. George Lucaci, MBA '76, senior managing director for Channel Capital Group in New York spoke to a select group of students on the state of the hedge fund industry in the wake of the current crisis. William Fox, managing director for Alavarez & Marsal and CFO for Lehman Holdings spoke about his role in the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy proceedings. Finally, the FDFCC's Fall Speaker Series ended with Chad Holliday, chairman of the board for DuPont, recently elected board member for Bank of America, and GWSB Executive-in-Residence. Holliday spoke to a room of nearly 100 students and alumni about "green jobs" and strategic corporate social responsibility. The event was co-sponsored with Net Impact and the GWSB Department of Strategic Management and Public Policy.

Stay tuned for Spring 2010 events. If you'd like to learn more about how to get involved, please contact the F. David Fowler Career Center or the Office of Development and Alumni Relations.

Undergraduates reap the benefits from Links for Life Luncheon - By Jamie Ramacciotti, BBA '10

On Wednesday, October 14th, undergraduate students had the unique opportunity to sit down with GWSB Alumni at another installment of the Links for Life program.  In an informal setting, students were able to connect with alumni who not too long ago, were in their shoes.

As a senior who will be graduating this December, speaking to alumni about my job search helped to ease some anxiety and opened my eyes to many opportunities that I hadn't considered before.  We spoke about job searching, internships, and how being a student at the School of Business provides students with invaluable tools for entering the workforce.  It is always great to meet GWSB Alumni who are willing to share their experiences with current students, and I look forward to participating in programs like this both as a student in the coming months and as an alumna next year.

On behalf of all of the students that attended the lunch, I'd like to thank the alumni that gave up their afternoon to be with us.  It was an excellent experience for all students who attended.
