GW Tech Alumni Group Hosts Roundtable Discussion on Cloud Computing

A quick glance through today's technology news headlines is likely to reveal several references to cloud computing. As interest and investment in this new technology grows, the GW Tech Alumni Group has kept pace. On April 20th, the group hosted a discussion entitled "Securing the Cloud", which explored challenges and experiences with security in the cloud computing environment from both industry and academic perspectives. The event was attended by more than 60 alumni, students and professionals interested in the topic.

The discussion was led by representatives from a breadth of companies and governmental agencies on the cutting edge of cloud use. Organizations represented included Amazon, Inc., Akamai Technologies, The Federal Communications Commission, and Apptis, Inc. Brian Moran, EMIS '07, CEO of GovernmentCIO and President of the GW Tech Alumni Group, served as the discussion's moderator. The conversation focused on strategies for using the cloud to minimize attacks, enhance site security and provide an additional layer of protection for customer data.

The evening was wrapped up with the raffling off of a new iPad 2 to one lucky event attendee. To view video from the event, which was webcasted live, visit this link. Author Christine Brown-Quinn, MBA '92, Speaks with Students, Alumni

On Wednesday, April 20th, Christine Brown-Quinn, MBA '92 and author of Step Aside Super Woman...Career & Family is for Any Woman, spoke with an intimate group of students and alumni about the challenge of balancing professional and family life as a woman. The event was co-sponsored by the GWSB Office of Alumni Relations, the student chapters of GWWIB and NAWMBA and the newly formed United Women in Business (UWIB) which is comprised of recent GWSB Alumnae. On her first return to campus since graduation, Quinn told the group, "It feels like I am coming home!" Quinn facilitated a dialogue with attendees fielding their questions and sharing her experience on building a career while balancing the challenges of managing a family.

GWSB Alumna and UWIB co-founder Betsy Smith, BBA '09, said "Christine was absolutely incredible; I was blown away by her seven tips for a great career. I especially appreciated her emphasis on not allowing yourself to opt out of professional and personal opportunities because the path seems difficult. She encouraged us to believe in the power of problem solving noting that with adjustments here and there, we don't have to say no to the good stuff that comes our way!"

Gabbi Baker, BBA Candidate '13, added "It was wonderful to be able to engage in discussion about Christine's experiences as a woman working in the financial sector and now consulting and coaching about female empowerment. Her advice was applicable to women (and men) of all ages, and I'm looking forward to reading her book, Step Aside Super Woman."

Prajakta Chitre, MBA Candidate '12 said "Christine is no doubt a very impressive and accomplished woman in terms of her career, but it was her practical advice and her breadth of experience, that was applicable not only to women but all young professionals, that really had an impact on me."

Quinn is the founder of The Female Capitalist, a consulting agency that assists organizations in reaping the full benefits of female talent. "You don't have to be "Superwoman" any more, but you still have to work hard at both sides of life," says Quinn.

GWSB Professor Honored for Teaching Excellence

Scheherazade Rehman, BA '85, MBA '89, PhD '92 and professor of international business and international affairs, was among five George Washington University faculty members honored on April 20 with the Oscar and Shoshanna Trachtenberg Faculty Prize. Rehman's award recognizes her excellence in teaching. She is the first faculty member from GWSB to receive the award.

Rehman's ability to present international business concepts in a relevant and engaging manner has earned consistent praise from her students. "Professor Rehman completely reshapes students' thinking about the world and is relentless in her desire for students to truly understand the material," said Professor of Geography and International Affairs Marie Price, a 2005 Trachtenberg Prize winner and presenter of the 2011 awards. The prizes are endowed by former GW President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg in memory of his parents and their respect for higher education.

"It's when you see the light go off - that ah-ha moment - that the students get self-motivated. I don't have to push them," Rehman said. "Students come up with innovative ideas. They keep you on your toes."

This is the third university-wide award that Rehman has won. She received her PHD from GW in 1992, her MBA in 1989 and her BA from GW in 1985.
