Case Writing Workshop

May 15-17, 2007
The George Washington University

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

The GW-CIBER (GW Center for International Business Education & Research) and the George Washington School of Business would like to invite you to participate in a Case Writing Workshop from May 15-17 at GW’s School of Business. The workshop will be led by distinguished case writing instructor, Jim Erskine ( Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario), who has taught case writing workshops for over 8,000 participants in 35 countries. The workshop is designed for faculty and doctoral students who currently or intend to use cases they author in their teaching and/or research.

This workshop is generously funded by the GW-CIBER and the GWSB and space is available at no charge for interested faculty and doctoral students. Space is limited, however, and registrations will be provided on a first come, first served basis. All participants must meet the participation criteria and fulfill the workshop obligations as indicated below. Please contact GW-CIBER at ciber@gwu.edu by Monday, April 23rd if you would like to participate in the workshop.

PRE-CASE WRITING WORKSHOP ASSIGNMENT

The goal of the three-day workshop is for each participant to write an original, field-based, maximum three-page case (plus up to two pages of exhibits) that is ready to be sent out for release and to start writing a preliminary teaching note. This goal is ambitious, the workshop is intense and the daily schedule is from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Each participant is asked to commit, full time, to the individual, small group and large group sessions interspersed throughout the three days.

To help start the workshop quickly on May 15, every participanpts needs to complete a pre-workshop assignment (Please click HERE to access the Pre-Workshop Assignment). This assignment involves reading selected chapters and pages in a book called Writing Cases, conducting an interview with a local manager in your area of interest and writing just the opening paragraph for a potential case. During the workshop itself, participants will work on completing their three-page case and starting their preliminary teaching note.

It is important that every participant fully completes the assignment prior to the workshop so that everybody can start together on May 15.

If you have any questions or concerns about this prior preparation, please contact Hildy at teegen@gwu.edu.
