Applying to the Institute
Applying to the Summer Doctoral Institute is a two-step process. The first step is to apply to the program itself. Part of the application requires applicants to rank the GW faculty that they would like to work with and to list research ideas. Because the faculty-scholar mentor relationship is an important aspect of the program, we strongly encourage applicants to contact professors to discuss common research interests before applying. Please note that all fulltime GW faculty members are eligible to participate in the Summer Doctoral Institute program. For a listing of GW schools and college web sites, visit the About GW page. To review the current research interests of some of the participating faculty, visit the Mentors page.
After applications are received, a committee will select the top applicants and their profiles will be sent to the participating GW professors to review. Based on recommendations made by the GW professors, the committee will perform the final matching of doctoral students and mentors. Applications must be received by January 11, 2008 to be considered.
Once the selected applicants have been matched with faculty advisors, notification will be sent by e-mail. At this point, the second phase of the application process begins. Applicants selected for participation in the program must collaborate with their faculty advisor to complete and submit a project proposal contract by January 31, 2008 in order to secure their spot in the Summer Doctoral Institute. The contracts will be sent by e-mail along with the selection notification. Seven to ten doctoral students will be selected for the Summer 2008 program. Any selected candidates that fail to submit the project proposal contract by the deadline will lose their spot in the program and another candidate will be selected.
