This summer, approximately ten doctoral students will be selected
to participate in the prestigious George Washington University
Summer Doctoral Institute for Research and Study on Institutions
and Development. Spend your summer conducting research in the
nation’s capital, home to many of the world’s most
influential institutions. This cross-disciplinary program will
facilitate research related to institutions and development from
the perspective of a broad range of social sciences.

Faculty Mentorship
The heart of the Summer Doctoral Institute program is the mentoring
relationship between the doctoral scholars and GW faculty members.
You’ll work closely throughout the summer with your faculty
mentor on a research project of mutual interest on the topic
of institutions and development. The opportunity to work closely
with established researchers in your chosen field is an important
component of the program that will provide you with lasting benefits.

Community of Scholars
Build a network of like-minded scholars from across the country!
The Summer Doctoral Institute brings together approximately ten
doctoral scholars from a broad range of social science disciplines
that have an interest in institutions and development. This is
your opportunity to join a community of mutual learning that
will last not just the length of the program, but for the length
of your career. You and your peers will live in on-campus apartments,
building bonds as you interact in a variety of scholarly activities
while also taking time to explore all that the city has to offer.
Alumni activities will help maintain this life-long scholarly
network for years to come.
Washington, DC Resources
You’ll live in the heart of it all: Just blocks from the
White House and Capital Hill, across the street from the World
Bank and the International Monetary Fund, and near a wide range
of embassies, nongovernmental organizations, and multilateral
institutions. This is the perfect opportunity to make connections
and utilize resources that you can make use of throughout your
career. In addition, Washington, DC offers all the amenities
and features that you would expect of an international city.

Learning Opportunities
As a scholar in the Summer Doctoral Institute, you’ll
have a chance to take part in a variety of learning opportunities
throughout the length of the program:
- Doctoral Colloquium Doctoral scholars will participate in
a regular brown bag series to discuss the research projects
of each of the student/faculty teams.
- Faculty Development Program on Institutions & Development.
Summer doctoral scholars will be offered full fellowships to
attend a three-day, intensive workshop that will attract faculty
from around the country. The program will highlight resources
for teaching and research on the topic of "Institutions & Development."
- Doctoral Seminar For those students who would like to get
more formal grounding on current research in International
Business, a doctoral seminar will be offered. Students may
register for the class for GW credit or choose to take part
in particular sessions of interest.

Getting Published
Part of your Summer Doctoral Institute experience will involve
preparing your research for the publishing process. Through your
partnership with a GW faculty member, you’ll have the opportunity
to become a coauthor on an article that will be submitted to
a high quality, peer-reviewed outlet.

All doctoral scholars will receive free hosuing in on-campus apartments. Scholars will also recieve a $2,500 stipdend to defray travel and other living expenses.
